YACT: '86 Trans Am

Here's the Craigslist page: http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/car/136246596.html

This is a '86 Pontiac Trans Am that a guy is selling in Doylestown, which is less than 30 minutes away from my house. The car looks to be in really good shape. The only thing that he says the only things that need to be done is fix the underbody exhaust piping and install a new oil pan. The car itself is only $1600 and it had 100K miles on it with a rebuilt tranny which has 31,000 on it.

My question: Should I at least check the car out and schedule a test drive? I'll get a Carfax report as well, so I can check the title ahead of time.

The price seems pretty good and it does look to be in nice shape. Whats your plan for it? Can you work on it yourself? The exhaust is no big deal but the oil pan could cost a lot to have somebody else replace. Some cars you can crawl under it and just pop it off in a couple mins and on others you practically have to pull the engine.

350s only came in auto during those years. Had to get a 305 for a manual.

Oooo, and it's even got the vinyl lettering on the windshield so you KNOW it's a Trans Am! 😀
I'd at least check it out... and talk him down a bit in price.

Yes, I will work on it myself, with some help from my uncle. He builds custom street rods and bikes and has owned just about every muscle car I can think of. I also have a friend whose dad was a mechanic. This can be good, because it could be a learning experience.

On the 350 in that car, you have to disconnect the exhaust pipe at the mainfolds & remove the front engine mount bolts and then raise the engine to replace the oil pan.

He says it needs the oil pan replaced. This is a bad sign. I'd say keep looking.

Huh? It could very well just be the dude just means the gasket and even if the oil pan need replace, only reason for that I can think of is rust or hitting something denting the hell out of it, still not a big deal.

Well I don't know why the oil pan is a problem, seeing as it only costs $45 and I can get someone to show me how to do it...

Without knowing why it needs replaced, it doesn't mean anything.
As Zim pointed out:beer:, it's a serious chore to replace it.

Oh, yeah it's a bit of a PITA to replace it, but it'd be a good learning experience if that's what the OP wants. I thought you meant there was something seriously wrong with the motor because the pan needed replaced.

Yeah, but it doesn't have the screaming chicken decal on the hood.

I'd only buy a Trans Am if it were the black and gold smokey and the bandit edition car.

Eh, I could apint it black and put the gold pheonix on the front, but it wouldn't be the same, would it.....

Nay on the 86. 80's Camaros and TAs were total crap. When they ran right, they were awesome. But it never lasts long. And that's not counting the plastic bits falling all over the road..

If you're going to paint it black, go all the way! 😛
