R32:

AWD, 240 HP. More power, better control. But its on the older chassis, and manual transmission has been getting on my nerves in traffic.

GTI:
Newer design, nicer interior. DSG transmission which is supposed to be very smooth. But it has less power and FWD.

Both are around the same price, low to mid 20k.

I need to go test drive both, but would like opinions from people here. And no, I don't want a MazdaSpeed :)

R32.

I just think the MK5's are attrocious in looks. They have those ugly ass stock wheels that look like frisbees with holes in them, and then you have the front bumper that is painted a different color than the rest of the car to match the black grille. I just think they are so ugly.

I have a 2003 20th AE GTI and it is a blast. It's looks are very similar to the R32 stock but not nearly the power. I also like the colors of the R32 a lot. I say get the R32.

Oh yah, and you need a poll.

VW's are unreliable POS's, although fun to drive. I don't recommend them to college students. Do some reseach, if you don't believe me.

That pretty much goes for all Euro cars. If you buy any of them, especially used, buy the warranty, even though you might have been taught not to.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd pick the GTI, only because it would be a new car. I would be afraid of reliability issues with both cars, but more so with the R32 since it's used. Previous owners most likely pushed the hell out of that car.

This kind of decision can only be made up by you based on what *you* want, not what others want to see you drivve. Personally, if I had no other choice, I'd probably go with the R32 because it has power, AWD, and a manual transmission. There's probably a good bit of room for upgrades as well thanks to the turbo.

Not in college anymore :p

And yes, I will definatly buy a warranty. I've already owned a corrado before, if anyone knows vw corrados, they'll understand when i say I've seen it all with VW's. But I can't help it, I think I need german engineering for my next car.

If they are about the same price I would completely recommend the R32. It's way more fun to drive, and the AWD is a monster. Plus, the body on the older one is way nicer.
I've had my VR6 gti of the golf iv body for the last 4 year, and it last me all through college. :)

edit: and personally, I love the manual on my car ... it's so soft ... and smoooooth ... mmmm.
I'm gonna go to work now :)

the MK4 definetly doesn't look as good as the MK5. R32 uses haldex a pretty crappy implementation of AWD. How many more years is the VW warranty going to last on an R32. Most R32's are going to be owned by enthusiasts who probably have heavy foots and think they are speed racer, i.e. potential for problems down the road. No DSG, yes it is that good. New R32 is coming out so expect a large decrease in MKIV R32's resale value in the next year. Odometer that reads 0 or odometer that reads 30 - 50k. 40hp more with R32. R32 worse gas mileage.

I ordered a 4dr GTI should be picking it up next month and these are some things I thought about when I was in your position. I think the R32 is really a niche car and once the MKV GTI was released I think that niche became even smaller.

See sig. I would take the R32 over any and all other GTIs. You know you can buy a bolt on supercharger for the R32, right?

I say you go for the R32, but if the tranny is really pissing you off, go for the DSG. You can shift yourself when you feel frisky and relax when you don't.

No doubt, German engineered cars are a kick in the ass to drive. :)

well get the smoke out of them then. The mk5 gti is just flat out ugly as hell. it's probably one of the ugliest new cars on the market IMO.

and this is coming from a VW guy, as I'm on my 2nd VW right now.

I actually like the look of the MK V GTI's. I don't like th jettas or passats but the GTI's with the Hufeisen rims look sick.
