I found a guy selling his 2001 IS300 for $13,000. The car has 112,000 miles on it, mostly freeway miles he says from driving to and from the northern part of the state for work.

I currently have a '97 Honda Accord, which has cost me quite a bit in repairs. To the point this past year that it was as if I was paying a $320/month car payment. In reality, my actual payment is like a 1/4 of that... Needless to say, I'd like a newer car...

Noone really supports me in the decision (i.e.; family, co-workers, friends), in fact they think I'm an idiot for even considering it. Maybe I am, or maybe it's because of my situation...

I'm 23 years old, I work part-time as a system test engineer for a software company and get paid fairly well in comparison to other students and people my age. I go to school full-time and am planning to go to med school in about a year and a half so I won't be working full-time any time soon and that is my primary focus... As far as expenses go, I'm not married, no kids, my schooling is taken care of and I don't have to worry about rent (and no I don't live at home).

Any thoughts, advice? Does anyone here own a Lexus or has anyone owned one? If so, how much were basic maintenance repairs, and would you recommend buying one?

CLIFFS:
Want car.
Noone supports decision, they think it's a really bad idea.
I make ok money.
Full-time student.
No other commitments or overhead in my life (i.e.; wife, kids, rent, etc, debt).

What have you been repairing on the Accord?

Remember - you own this car, you know what's been wrong and what hasn't, you have no idea about this Lexus and for all you know, may need to go through the same repairs that your Accord has this year.

13 grand for a 113K car that's not all that spectacular in the first place? hell no.

Wheel bearing replacement
2 CV axles (on same side, long story)
Exhaust gasket manifold
Timing belts, spark plug cables plus others due to oil spilling on them
Just to name a few off the top of my head...

i'd rather use the 13k to help pay for med school, or just save money in general. It's always a bad idea to buy a used car when you're a student. Keep that money, and get a nice new car when you graduate. In the mean time, you can always just use 5-7k to get another decent used car. not 13k.

Also, I'd rather get a new car, so you can continue to biuld your credit (as long as you finance it for the short term... like 2-4 (MAX!!!) years, and your credit rating is above 700).

plus, @ car w/ over 100k miles may be reliable, but you will more than likely have to replace parts just for general maintenance.

With 5 to 7k you should be able to find yourself a nice used BMW in California, if you really want a luxury car.
