I'm currently looking for a mechanic to check the car out, but I want to hopefully get an idea of what could be wrong before I bring it in. The car has about 56K miles on it and I haven't had any real problems with it up until now. Recently, I noticed that it's been making a strange high-pitched noise when backing up. It's not the normal "rmmmmm" noise that I usually hear when backing a car up, but more like a squeal. The car goes into reverse without a problem, except for making this noise. Any ideas from the car people on ATOT?

Well, if you want to drive to Connecticut, I'll diagnose your vehicle for free :p

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. ;)

Anyone else have an idea?

Most likely your brake pads are worn down to the indicators, or very close to it.
These indicaters are little metal tabs that are mounted on your brake pads, when the lining wears down to them, they start to squeal, now if it only does it when you are backing up, this indicates that your pads are wearing unevenly, thus they only touch the rotor when backing up.

(This is a GUESS, I cannot properly diagnose vehicle problems over a BBS)

Thanks. I'm just trying to get some possibilities before I take the car in, but anything that you can think of is much appreciated. :D

There is an easy check you can do yourself, remove either front wheel and check the thickness of the pads ;)
