YACT-2000 Dodge Durango

JulesMaximus

No Lifer
and the transmission recently crapped out on it. She had it fixed to the tune of about $2500 and now the engine crapped out, the shop says she lost a cylinder and needs to have the engine rebuilt (she has the V8 engine).

Is this common with these vehicles? Man, I'd be freaking pissed. She says it's been maintained by the book since day one.

WTF Dodge??? This is why I'll never buy a chrysler product.

Chances are your Mitsu truck IS a Dodge.

Mopar has sort of a bad reputation when it comes to trannies. I have a 1990 Dodge Dakota that had to have a new one while it was still under warranty, and hasn't had any problems since. It has 200k on it now, and runs great, FWIW.

The tranny part doesn't surprise me. My stepfather owns a transmission shop and he's always loved Durangos and Caravans. He just likes Chrysler vehicles in general these days.

Funny you mention that. I worked in the car rental industry in the early-mid 90s and I remember those Dodge Caravans were always stranding our renters due to transmission problems. Nice to see Chrysler has fixed the problem...

Most Dodge vehicles then had Mitsu engines.

LOL, Exactly. People crack me up.

As for the dodge issue, yes this is pretty common. 110k miles in 5 years is insane though, why someone who travels that much would buy a truck like that is beyond me. Most females don't use a truck for what you would use it for, much less a V8 that gets 10 MPG. Sounds like she has some poor taste, although that doesn't relate much to this thread.

Get this though, she's an engineer...and she's attractive!

Actually, she has kids so that's probably one of the reasons why she bought it.

Its stories like these and having managed a dodge service department that makes me never want to buy a chrysler product. Only one I will touch is a Jeep Cherokee with a 4.0 straight 6 and a 4 speed tranny. Everything else Chrysler makes or has made since 1975 has sucked big time.

When I worked at the dealership and the countless mini vans, trucks, neons, and 3 speed trannys that come throught there all the time made me a firm believer in this that they suck. Great looking cars, IMO some of the best looking cars and truck out there. Just to bad the mechanicals dont perform as good as the stuff looks 😛

Sh!t happens.
My parents and I have always had problems with the transmission in numerous dodge caravans.

110,000 miles in 5- 6 years?

Hmm how often was the oil changed,
how often was the tranny serviced?

I have a 1995 Chevy V8 full size van, with 282,000 miles,
the tranny is original, and so is the engine.

The timing chain was changed at 120,000 miles, and at 235,000.

The tranny was serviced every 40,000 miles,
the oil and filter,every 5,000.

I also have a 1964 Valiant with 110,000 miles,I rebuilt the engine last year,
it still ran,but burned a little oil,and leaked a little.

Maintenance helps.

She said it has been maintained by the book. She's an engineer and she's pretty anal about stuff like routine maint. I don't doubt her at all.

Wow,that sux then.

I know there are coolant problems/issues, with many newer vehicles,
and for anyone, I suggest adding a bottle or 2 of antirust/water pump lube.

There is a new "Prestone" out that can be used in any vehicle,
there was problems with the "Dexcool" and some other coolants with the
large use of disimilar metals {like a lot of Aluminum}in so many engines.

I have been told, that is One of the causes of head gasket problems on some cars.

Cometic makes a great head gasket for aluminum heads.
