YACT: '00 sunfire occasionally dies when stopping

A mechanic I am not 🙂 Any idea what it might be and / or what I can do to try and fix it?

Nate

nope, but then this evening was the first time I'd drivent it in a long time, and it didn't do anything weird when I was in it. My brother has been driving it for a while though; he's the one that said it was having problems.

lacking on the info here. I'm going to say vacuum leak anyways though.

Sorry, but at the moment that's all I've got. Like I said, I drove it tonight and it didn't do a thing.

check EGR and vaccum leaks. We had a Ford ranger come in that would not start. then it just dies while idleing but runs fine for the most part otherwise after we replaced the motor, save for a buzzing nose. We've had it for 6 weeks. had to do a engine pull and replacement from a junkyard. then we found the junkyard engine needed new fuel rail/injector seals. then new gaskets for the intake manifold. then new vaccum hoses. then new egr valves gasket and cleaning. then thermostat replacenment(that didnt affect running though) and now it's fixed. worst. car. ever.

could be the equivalent of the TPS (throttle positioning sensor) that hondas have... as some one already said there could be a vaccum leak in one of the lines to that, or the internal idler spring could be too loose... does it stall when warmed up or while still cool?

your distributor could be turned slightly off, causing the idle to fluctuate, and occasionally it could die...

throttle line could jusut be too tight in general, not allowing enough air into the throttle body when the pedal is not pushed...

Yeah, no problems (or updates) with rice burners around here... (Why do we get all the fvckheads around here, anyway? )
To balance out the sh!t heats like you! 😉

Suggestion on cause: You foolishly bought a car you KNEW was crappy. Evidence: Pull down the right sun shade and see what happens to your mirror.

Some possible causes in no particular order. Not an exaustive list.

IAC
RPM not increasing with A/C usage (comes on with defroster. IAC related)
TPS
Vacuum Leak
Trans Problem
Linkage
Voltage Issue; Alternator or subsystem(unlikely)
Fuel Pump or delivery (unlikely)
Bad injector(s) (unlikely)

To the people that are actually helping, thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to fill the gas tank and put in some injector cleaner today and see what that does.

Nate

Well, I guess the injector cleaner didn't do anything. It did actually die once today while I was driving, and almost did it a second time. Fortunately that time I was already sitting in a parking spot at the store. I sat there for a second listening to the football game on the radio, and all of a sudden the engine started going nuts - instead of idling at a set speed, it started revving. The tach was bouncing between almost 0 and about 1500RPM. I hit the gas for a second, let it off, and it calmed down. After I finished shopping and went back to the car, everything was fine.

Is the check engine light on? If so, AutoZone can get a code out of it to get you started in the right direction. Otherwise:
  • Check for those vacuum leaks.
  • Do a tuneup, including plugs, wires, filters and throttle body cleaner.
  • Start throwing cheaper parts at it, like throttle position sensor, then idle air valve, mass airflow sensor, O2 sensor(s)...
  • If that all fails, get it diagnosed by your mechanic.

I've got the same issue with my '91 POS Tempo. I think it's an electrical thing as I notice the idle is worse when I've got the lights/radio/defroster on. Turn them all off and it's much better, but still not perfect.

OP: Try idling with no electrical stuff running and see if that helps.

idle stabilizer valve (IAC for yankee cars) and controlling circuitry - ECU, a temp sensor and a switch or pot on the throttle (tps). The controller should have a line from the tach and the A/C as well.

on my car (older audi) it has its own computer, but im sure it's integrated into the ECU on more modern cars.
