YACPT: Yet another cell phone thread...Verizon or Sprint?

Gooberlx2

Lifer
So I'm moving to Orlando, Fl on Thursday and need a new cell service (currently CellOne).

Even though I'll be in Orlando most of the time, I still care about: Twin Cities, Milwaukee, Chicago, Atlanta.

I know that Verizon is consistently said to have the best quality service and coverage, though Sprint's coverage is larger overall, based on their maps (more coverage in the Rocky states).

So anyway, some info:

- I generally don't use more than 250 minutes in a month
- My dad can get a 20% discount on Sprint plans/phone/etc...
- It'll be a shared line with my mom, who's only going to use it for emergencies to have a phone in her car
- I have lots of friends that use Sprint (so calling them would be free)

Plans:

Verizon:
$40 - 400 anytime - 1000 mobile 2 mobile - unlimited nights & weekends - $20 2nd line

Sprint:
$36 - 500 anytime - unlimited mobile 2 mobile - unlimited nights & weekends - $16 2nd line

Any comments? Is Verizon still worth it because of the quality of service, or are they really about the same? Any experiences? Any comments suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks.

How's your experience with coverage/quality in other parts of Florida with them?

dont have much experience outside of central fl, i've been to ocala, gainesville, st pete, tampa, miami, and its worked great for me, and along all the interstates of course it worked fine too...havent had much bad to say about them....in fact, when im in the woods (ocala national forest) i get better reception than my brother with nextel 😉.

awesome. Any other people with suggestions? It looks like Sprint is probably the way to go. But I just wanna be sure. 😉

I wouldn't get a Verizon phone, simply because of their STUPID COMMERCIALS!!! I hate those things. All of them! They seriously raise my blood pressure!!!!

Yeah...sorta. Verizon has a larger coverage area with its own towers. Sprint appears to have a huge "extended" area (I'm looking at the maps right now) leasing off of other peoples' towers. Perhaps that's a big reason for the quality differences?

Tmobile. If not, go with Verizon - anything but Sprint.

Looking at Tmobile's map (and my friend's experience with them) once you stray from the interstates you seem to be roaming, or the reception is crap.

What was your experience with Verizon vs. Sprint, and where?

I live in Gainesville right now (1 hour north) and have been to orlando many times with my Sprint phone... Works perfectly...

Verizon on the other hand sucks down here... My dad just made the switch to sprint from verizon and my mom is soon to follow suit...

FYI, T-Mobiles service in Florida has gone rapidly downhill. I was on them before i switched to sprint.

Based on my experience with Sprint I'd say go with verizon.

what was your experience?

Absolute crap coverage and terrible customer service. They promised service in many areas of Michigan that they didn't actually have. It was so bad that is sparked a class-action lawsuit in my area which I joined. Sprint tried every underhanded trick in the book to get it dismissed but ultimately they settled and I got a measly $100 for all the trouble. I will never do business with Sprint again unless they can prove they have completely turned around, but nothing I have heard of read seems to indicate this.
