YACFT (yet another college football thread), wat does a safety do?

provides pass coverage deep in the secondary... used for zone schemes and can be used in blitzing packages from the secondary...

pretty much the same as a cornerback...
 
The safety usually patrols the middle of the secondary guarding against the deep ball while the cornerbacks play tighter on the receivers that line up on the line of scrimmage. They're also thought of as the last line of defense (hence the name safety).
