YACAT: Would replacing "Premium" speakers be worth the cost?

I have the "Premium" Mach audio package in my 2000 Ford Taurus SE. The package includes 6 speakers, an amp (Unsure of wattage), and a 6 disc cd changer.

I don't really want a big ass sub box in my trunk and the bass from the standard speakers is usually fine (As I listen to rock, talk radio, etc.), so I thought maybe replacing the speakers would be better. I scoped out the speaker mounts, and I think I can install the speakers myself, but it is worth the cost to replace the already "premium" speakers to achieve better sound? Also, would I need a new amp if I just replace the speakers and not add a sub or anything extra?

I think replacing the head unit would probably do more for you than replacing the speakers. Don't know if the 2000 Taurus is the egg-shaped style or not, the head unit in those is egg shaped as well. :(

How much would you be willing to spend on the new speakers? We can better judge if we know your price range:)

um, depends wat size you want, a lot of the GOOD component (crossover, tweeters, and midrange, pair) require an external amp source, and yea, a new headunit might work nicely.

if you have 6.5" spots, go over to www.thezeb.com, and pick up the cdt 61a set, 150 for a 300$ set, cuz the paint is to dull. and the get a u.s. acoustics amp, the 65x4watt there.

um, and yeah, most ppl will say, only go for front speakers, because rear fill throws off the imaging of the speakers.

Sorry, I don't really want to replace the head unit. Here is a pic of what it looks like (although this isn't a pic of my car).

Hmmm.. maybe it isn't worth it afterall (Unless I overhaul the whole system which costs a lot of money which I don't want to spend :) )

man, the headunit is easy to replace, and that itself can actually make a difference in sound quality. find a used one, and they arent that esxpensiver.

If I buy just the headunit, can I still use that with my cd changer and amp? (Both of which are in the trunk if it matters).

yea, what are they powering currently? are they aftermarket or oem parts?

if OEM parts, you will need some sort of aftermarket to OEM amplifier adapter, b/c of how OEM amps are. just go ask on some car audio specific sites, sounddomain.com, or soundillusions.net either one will know what you need, and know more than me.
