YACAT- Installing a Capacitor, need advice..

Thinking about installing this bass tube in my car...

The audio guy says that installing a capacitor will be a good idea... The price is close to 70-80 USD...

I was thinking... can i go to an electrical shop and pick up a capacitor of the same rating? It will definately be cheaper, but will it work as well? Is it going to be bad for the car's electronic system?

A capacitor is only a band-aid to an inadequate electrical system.

Don't bother wasting your money on a capacitor unless you find your electrical system dropping out when the bass hits (ie lights dimming etc)

Edit: I thought bass-tubes died out about 10 years ago 😕

Confused

If they died out 10 years ago, what do you recommend for getting good bass in a hatchback?

As far as I always thought, bass tubes weren't as good as proper subs. Maybe that's changed recently.

I'd go for a nice 10" sub in a box, they will go easily in the boot of a hatchback. Hell, I had a 12" sub and carpc in a custom-built box in the boot of my Nova (i know, i know 😉) and I still had plenty of room!

What car do you have btw?

The answer to your question is YES... A capacitor is a capacitor. The ones for Car audio simply are dressed up for marketing reasons.
A Bass Tube will have a pronounced resonant frequency, which may be undesirable , depending on the volume of the rest of the enclosure (car).
Better to get a sub with a less peaky response curve, imo.

You absolutely dont need a cap for an amp that pulls 100watts RMS. Heck you dont even need 4g wire, but if you want to feel a bit better, get that super popular wally world 4g wiring kit for ~$30.

I have the Infinity Basslink It was cheap, easy to install and sounds great. I bought it mainly just to fill out the sound and it gets the job done. Its not gonna shake the car next to you, but it will give your music a bump.

EDIT: I *think* street price is around 300 right now.
