YACAT: *Good* MP3 Head units

Shawn

Lifer
Who makes some of the nicest head units? I've currently been looking into purchacing a Pioneer Premier DEH-750MP but my dad seems to be convinced that Pioneer is crap. My friend on the other hand seems to think Pioneer is the best. So I'm not sure now. What would be a nice head unit w/ mp3 in the $200-300 range? I'm looking for something with good sound quality above all else.

check out the Pioneer 4500MP
its only $200 and it sounds pretty nice. I have always used pioneer for head units, so I am prejudice. The one I have now is 5 years old and still sounds just as good as the day I bought it. If you dont want pioneer check out the Fosgate RFX 9120, Rockford has the highest RMS power of any deck in its price range.

The rockford looks kinda cheap though. If I was going to get a cheaper model pioneer i'd get the 5500 since I dislike anything w/o a rotary volume dial.

the rockford might look cheap, but that thing is heavier than nell carters boob

JVC maybe?

The fosgate HU is terrible! I owned it and it skipped like crazy, didnt' read ID3 tags and had problems with high bittrate MP3s..Almost forgot, it spat out 1/2 of the CDRWs that I tried to play.. It officially supports CDRW but has problems with alot of media.. Pioneer is great so is alpine ... Some1 stole my rockford mp3 HU and I replaced it with the cheapest JVC one.. Nothing fancy and it looks cheap but it displays ID3 tags and plays every disk that I've tried.. I don't recommend it but prefer it over the crappy R.F. one..

I was looking at the Pioneers in that price range.

Why, oh why do they not all have volume dials?? I HATE having to push buttons for the volume.
If that one you linked to had a volume dial I would get it, since it has exactly what I want and is the exact price I was willing to pay... but nooo, I have to pay $40 extra for a freaking volume dial. :|

WOW...you are the only person I have ever heard complain about fosgate decks...was it one of the older models?

I know what you mean. Pisses me off. Check ebay though..... much cheaper than the suggested retail price.

Actually, I found a ton of terrible reviews for the unit AFTER I picked it up.. It was an RFX9xxx.. Forgot the exact model number.. Red on silver (ick) color scheme, the front slides down.. It seems like RF headunits have quality control issues.. Some work great, others don't..

EDIT: Followed the link - looks to be exactly what I had

My friend just bought that exact headunit your looking at for 450 canadian. It is the nicest headunit at that price and is better than the JVC, Kenwoods, Panasonic, and Sonys. The Organic display is really cool and pioneer reads every CD out there. It also has sub control too and a ton of other features. Its looks are one of the best. You cant go wrong with pioneer or clarion but pioneer gives you more features at a lesser cost and looks better in my opinion.

Can't go wrong with an Alpine. Aesthetically pleasing and great quality. Maybe a bit over your budget, but well worth it in the long run in my opinion.

I have a premier 740(last year's model) and it's a very nice head unit. Before that I had a pioneer 6000 for 3 years and it still had no problems after 3 years of use.

I'd definately recommend pioneer if your plan on running speakers off of it. Pioneer's have one of the stronger internal amps among head units.

General car audio community (mp3 subgroup) opinion is that Kenwood and JVC decks are the best. Pioneer is known to have 2 second delay between songs when they switch, either manually or automatically. Alpine has another significant lag, though not as bad, and suffer from bad displays - most display only capital letters and look retarded as a result.

Go to HighwayMP3 for more info and make a point to check thier forums for tons of info. There is generally a separate forum for every head unit out so you can get some good ideas of what people do and don't like.

(I spent 3 months researching my second mp3 unit and ended up going with a Kenwood - display rocks and mp3 between-track lag time is about .5 seconds. Kenwoods are generally known to be the best in this regard.)

Ultimately your best bet would be to scour the highwaymp3 forums and burn a few discs and take them to a retailer that lets you play, find what you like, and then order it online to save some bucks. 🙂

Can you recommend a head unit which has an input jack located on the front.? Currently I am using a laptop as a mp3 player hooked up to my car stereo with a cassette adaptor.

Most JVC head units have this feature - my girlfriend has one and uses it for her iPod. She loves it. 🙂
