Car is a 1994 Civic EX sedan, has factory 5-1/4" for the front and rear deck lid, but can fit 6-1/2" with some trimming of the speaker plastic basket thing in the front door. I'm going for budget SQ, if there is even such a thing. I'd rather go with "little" known brand that offer good SQ than mass marketed/advertised speakers like pioneer or sony, for example. Will think about a sub if bass is really lacking, but really don't want a sub. Just a headunit plus four speakers. Will do install myself. Fullrange speakers if possible, but components if the price is right.

I was looking at the CDT audio component CL-61a that are $150 at TheZeb, but, I'd rather not go components if possible (more visible; likely to get stolen, plus ususally requires an amp for better sound, plus gotta put hole in door panel). Are the full range speakers from CDT any good? liek the CL-6x ($59.99 on sale), or are full ranges from other companies better? I read reviews of the Infinity reference speakers (6002i), but the reviews say they lack bass.

Any other recomendations? also for headunit...lookin at pioneer decks, but could use reccomendation for something that would drive the speakers cleanly, features are kinda secondary.

Thanks in advance.

dude, you cant get any sq without an amp. a headunit cannot!!! put out enough power to power decent aftermarket speakers.

get a cheap h/u, with preout, buy a 100x2 amp which is not that expensive, about 180 over at partsexpress.com (phoenix gold). and then get either the CDT cl61's or i have heard that RE's components are VERY nice for the price, and you would only need about a 75x2 watt amp for that.

while the sq won't be the best it can be, it will be loads better than the stock setup. I know that some of the alpine h/u have decent power ratings (but $$$), but i don't know how clean they'd drive aftermarket speakers. I'd rather spend more on speakers thatn a h/u, because like you pointed out, you can always get an amp later.

bump for the morning crowd

seeing how the CDT cl-61a are very good/hard to beat at that price ($150), looking at no more than $300 total front and back. would like to get full range speakers however.

I just did this for a friend and the total cost was around $600. 240watt RMS system. He got a headunit by panassonic that pumps out 60watts RMS to each speaker so he didn't need an amp. The speakers, just get any Infinity from Circuit City and you should be fine. Check sounddomain.com and etronics.com for good prices. The system is probably pumping out the 60RMS it claims, I don't know how so don't ask. Sounds amazing for that price.

If you just want it to be better than a stock system... go get a $100 Pioneer headunit that pumps out 22RMS per channel and get some decent speakers and it'll sound much better than stock.

If you want the BASS you need a sub, but if you don't want that loud bass that can be heard from a block away and just want great BASS just to make it feel like you have a small sub then some speakers can offer you good boom. KICKER I hear is good.

Good System for Cheap without a sub and wiring:
Infinity Kappa 62.5is in the FRONT $150?
Kicker SS Series SSMB6 in BACK $199
Panasonic MXE CQ-C9800U $300

You can probably find the speakers for way cheaper on ebay or on some sites.

you have the rears runing off the h/u? how do the cl-6x sound compared to the components up front? I'd be doing the install on my friends car, and he'd rather not get components, but at the price on those CDT 61a's are at I might try to talk him into them

I was wondering if you could comment on how the cl-6x compare to say, infinty reference 6002i.

thanks

I just bought two pair of Infinity Kappa two-ways, but I don't think my HU will be powerful enough for them. Therefore, I haven't installed them yet. My HU only has one pair of pre-outs.

My question: Can a modestly priced 4-channel amp be set up to split the input from one pair of pre-outs to all 4 channels? (I don't care about losing the fader control on the deck--I would set the levels on the amp and forget it.) Would I be better off using the speaker-level inputs, or is that a generally worse than using the line-level inputs?

to me, speaker level inputs can get messy; in general more wires to run. Going with the single preout on the deck would be cleaner and easier, imo, but not too much harder to use speaker inputs, just splice into the harness on the back of the deck, and then run those wires into a loom/tape/zipties/etc, and hookup to the amp. Labeling would be a good idea. Not all amps have speaker level inputs, just fyi.

I think most 4 channel amps have a switch to run them in either 4, 3 or 2 channel mode, as well as having seperate inputs for the front and rear, but you'lll only be using one input split into two sets of left and right channels.

what kappas do you have?

yeah i am running the cl 6x off the the h/u. they are pretty decent speakers for what they cost but the components are much better especially if u have them amped. i usually have the speakers faded to the front anyways unless i have passengers in the car. the only reason for the rear speakers were so the passengers can hear a little better.
