YACarT: Stereo Problems

sixone

Lifer
My car stereo can only be heard from the front right speaker. We've replaced the radio itself, the speakers, and the amplifier. After each replacement, all the speakers sound great for about a week, then suddenly only the one speaker puts out sound. What to check out next?

And a new car is NOT an option.

revamp the whole thing and put new wires in?

Well, I was hoping to avoid that, but I don't know what else to do. Can my local guy do it, or should I take it to a dealer? And how expensive is it going to be?

no clue but you should shop around. dealers are not ALWAYS more expensive than garages.

Who the heck installed the radio, speakers & amp? Why aren't you taking it back to them to fix?😕

We installed them. Why would we pay someone to do something so easy?

because now something is wrong and you are unable to trouble-shoot it yourself? sounds like something electrical is wrong and it's beyond your repair.

Check and/or re-wire the speakers, if not everything. It's annoying, but it should solve the problem.

You have a short some where. Why didn't you replace the wire in the first place?

We took it to a dealer, who said it was the speakers, which they no longer carry. We took it to a car audio place, and had them replaced, which of course didn't solve the problem. Going back to either place is obviously out of the question, but we live in a rural area, so there's not much competition.

The next guy was out of state, but specializes in parts/repair for our model - Lincoln Mark VIII. He said it was most likely the amp, so we replaced it. No joy.

Now I'm asking a tech form for car advice. How the mighty have fallen. 🙁 😉

1. what kind of car
2. what radio/amplifier did you replace your stock with?

Car Audio post disclaimer:
Of course you don't want to take my advice on car audio things. I only sell and install it for a living.

I spend 8 hours a week in this car, and I'm desperate - I'll take anything I can get. 🙁

It's a Lincoln Mark VIII - 1998. We replaced the stock radio and amp with stock, since we didn't want to mess around with it too much.

Easy fix to find out if its a wire pinched: buy an aftermarket deck and amp bypass kit. If that works, its not a pinched wire. If it doesn't then you will have to run new wires from the deck to the amp then from the amp to the speakers.

I just want you to read that sentance over and over again out loud, it's just too funny given your current situation.

Did you read my post above? We tried to get help from the car dealer and from a car audio store - both of whom failed to correctly diagnose the problem the first time. And I'm supposed to pay them to try again? Not gonna happen.

That sounds reasonable enough. I'll give it a shot.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful suggestions.
