I'm 25, in NYC, planning to buy the Scion TC soon. I was advised to get full coverage for a year or two and then drop it down to liability only because by then, the book value of the car is not worth full coverage. Is that a smart idea?

Also I was quoted for full coverage, 25000 liability, 1000 deductible, 1200 for six months by Geico and was advised that was a "preferred customer" quote.

How's that price sounding? Called progressive and they gave me a rough quote of about 15-1700.

It was pretty funny, both insurance companies had no idea what a scion TC was because it wasn't in their database yet. They kept asking me, "you sure it's a TC?" :D

edit: ah, yes i have 2 points for making a illegal right turn from last year. NY keeps putting up more new "no left turns, no right turns, no U-turns" all over the place. Can't do a damn thing except drive straight anymore. :disgust:

2400$ a year!!! thats more than i pay, im 18 in ohio with a 98 GMC jimmy.

do you have points or something?? you need to give that info too. but i guess new york might be more costly.

but id keep full coverage on it for about 3 years no one knows what resale on that car will be.

$25000 liability is a joke. God forbid you should get into an accident. You should look for $100K minimum, preferrably $300K-$1 million coverage.

Don't pee away your money. If you live in NYC, take the subway.

Yup, I carry a million dollars liability on both of my cars. That may sound excessive, but I wouldn't want to lose everythng I have worked for all my life.

If you get it, definitely don't get rid of the full coverage after only two years... Your car will still be worth well over $10,000, and you'd be SOL if you were at fault in an accident.

I thought you had to have at least $50,000 liability.

If you own a home, 25/50 (ny state min limits) isnt enough. at least 50/100. 100/300 is good. 300/300 is max, but PU can get you 1 mil or more. You need 300/300, pd100 to qualify for geicos PU pol.

Don't get full coverage, just add comp and coll, take off ers, rental, and mbi. Also you are in preferred, its more expensive..ie higher risk. Ask them if you rerate it for ultra preferred. And geico and progressive are not cheap in NYC, see if you can get quotes from other companies.
