YACamT: Do digicams just suck at fast action / continuous shot modes?

Still having severe problems with this Canon A70 and taking basketball pictures. I highly recommended the A70 to my future father-in-law for taking pictures of his son during highschool basketball games. The pictures are coming out blurry with the flash turned off.

However, the flash needs to be off to take picture in the continuous mode.

Here is what he wants to be able to do: Take nice, non-motion blurred pictures of his son going up for a layup and take like 3 to 5 really fast pictures. If the flash is turned on, even with the LCD turned off, the camera takes like 1 picture every 5 seconds, that is NOT fast. But when the flash is off, the pictures look like hell. Thanks guys

M4h, he wants a digicam so he can avoid processing film (he bought a photo printer and the works for this setup and is disappointed the actions shots look like crap)

What are the options?

He'll have to step up in price range and featureset then. While the A70's nothing to sniff at, it's still not what I'd consider a "professional" solution. Think digital SLR.

Get the Nikon D2H, 8pics/s 😀

Get his son to take multiple lay ups and take one photo with flash and high shutter speed.

canon rebel??? hehe.

im still trying to figure it out.

any reccomendations for a tutorial on everything, and how to use it?

Up the shutter speed or get a Digital SLR such as the Canon Digital Rebel.

If the guy has no budget concerns then I'd suggest the Canon 10D or even the 1D for sporting events such as these. I doubt he is looking to spend that much though.

Is your father-in-law trying to take these pictures in "auto" mode? If so, you're going to have to convince him to read the manual and learn how the other picture taking modes on the function dial work. Canon put a fast shutter speed mode (The icon looks like a little running guy) on the camera which will help a bit, but he might need to set the camera in Manual mode(The M icon) and manually adjust the shutter speed and aperture for optimal results.

Even with those setting changes, the A70 can only take pictures at a maximum rate of about 2 frames a second. If he wants something faster, I'd recommend spending the extra bucks on a digital SLR like the Canon Digital Rebel.

Put the camera in shutter priority mode, and choose a shutter speed that will stop the action. Set the ISO to the max setting, ISO 400 I think, and hope for the best. Indoor sports is always a challenge, even with gear costing thousands. The A70 only opens up to f/2.8, which is fine for most things, but it's going to make stopping the action inside difficult. I don't know a whole lot about the A70, but if the lens on it has a variable maximum aperture, you're going to have to zoom out until you're able to get f/2.8. That's the only way you're going to have a chance.

Why? Now can suggest he return it.

You'll need the brightest possible lens, and it ain't going to be had for that price.

As far as prosumer digicams go, I played with a Sony F828 last night at Circuit City...it's continuous shooting mode is the faster and longest I've seen, even better than Canon's Digital Rebel. The F282 is a VERY solid product. Sony's GUI still sucks major a$$, though.

I'd still take a Canon DR over an F828...at least until the F828 costs less than $800 (and less than a DR).
