YACameraT: Canon EOS 20D vs Sony A100K

I've been looking at a digital SLR to rekindle my photography hobby. Two years ago I sold my Canon 20D and my glass for financial reasons and my hobby stopped there. But now I'm getting back into it. I've been initially considering the Sony since I've heard great things about it and the price is right. But, I've come across numerous sites still selling new 20Ds for around the same price. So I'm kinda stuck... What do you guys think?

20D, without hesitation.

Partly because I'm partial to Canon's lenses and legacy. I know Canon will have an upgraded body for me in 5 years. Edit - an upgraded body *compatible with my glass*.

Also partly - though much less so - because I harbor a burning hatred of Sony.

You said exactly the same thing I would have said.

I've got a 20D and even IF the Sony was a better camera I still would not get it because I hate Sony so much.

I feel the same but I have the XTi...

The problem I have with the XTi is that it's a bit awkward to hold it. Do you get use to it after a while?

I've got the original Rebel, and a bunch of glass that predates it. I very much like the knowledge that I can do get a 5D (or a new Elan, should the film bug bite me again) and my glass will all be just fine. Well, except the kit lens that came with the rebel that I don't use.

It takes a bit of getting used to but I like the camera and the feel. I am happy with my purchase and just picked up the 580ex flash for it.

All these camera threads are really tempting me to get the XTi or the 20D........time to start looking at prices!

keep in mind Staples.com will price match as that is what I did

The 20D is a class above the A100, if you can get them at the same price (or roughly so) get the 20D.

The A100 is designed to line up against the XT and XTi and while I feel it competes quite well with both of those bodies, the 20D is a whole different class of camera.

So the 20D isn't really that out of date?

No, it's basically the same as the 30D but the 30D has a larger LCD, spot metering (important to some), a few more preset image parameters and some other minor differences. Most people who own the 20D don't consider the 30D enough of an upgrade to bother investing in.

Of course, rumor has it that Canon is going to release a 40D soon to replace the 30D. Even so, it will probably have a 10MP sensor and some sort of anti-dust system so still not a huge improvement. Nothing is official yet though.

Other than the stronger body, what makes the 20D better than the XT or even the XTi? Specs-wise, they're very similar.

way better viewfinder, easier and better controls, when talking about the XT, the 20D/30D is world's better in AF (The XTi stole the AF of the 30D), pc sync socket, more durable shutter, higher shutter speed, etc.

Everything you said ... plus with my 30D I can change ISO, exposure, shutter speed, etc. with a flick of the thumb and without looking at the camera in most cases. If you are a true hobbyist those controls make it worth it. Canon 30D/20D/XT/XTi all have the same sensor and will all take pretty much can get the same results.

Plus the 20D has a magnesium alloy body where the XTi is all plastic.

I remember trying out the Sony DSLR in the Sony store. I didn't like it very much. The controls wasn't intuitive and hard to figure out during first 5 minutes. A very small portion of the dislike is probably due to the fact it was tethered down.
