Well, I had originally planned to graduate in December, but...

I was just checking the summer schedule from my university and I figured I can finish this summer if I take 17 credits. I'd be taking three classes everyday from Monday to Thursday from the end of May to the end of June and then I would be taking 2 more classes everyday from the beginning of July to the end of July (That would be three monts of work compared to 4 months if I'd do it in the fall).

However, this would require me to get a school loan (the first one I 'd ever get ) and I believe that schedule would keep me from working full time (well not really full time it's more like 35-36 hrs/wk) as I have been doing for 4 years now. My work is directly related to my studies (CS major) so I'll be graduating with experience. I am done with my upper level classes and the classes related to my major. All the classes I need to finish are mostly gen ed that I didn't take when I was a freshman. However, many of them require a lot of reading (Bio, Geography and Literature Class) and probably they also require you to write a lot of papers (with the exception of BIO which instead has a 3 hour lab).

Regarding my current job, I believe they would let me take a leave without pay, but I still have to discuss that with my supervisor. Last year, they let me take a 10 week LWOP so I could intern at Fatwallet (I had a great time there but that's another story).

This would be the first time in four years (I am 21 turning 22 in June) where I'd do nothing besides studying. I'd be graduating in August this way. I really don't know what to do, I guess I am looking for advice from people who had done it before. The poll is just for fun. Ultimately, I won't based my decision on it.

edit: I want to add that I will take at least 4 credits this summer ( they are night classes so they won't affect my work at all), it's only one class that has a lab.

Summer school sucks. Work ethic declines significantly, plus the fact tons of material is jam packed into small time periods.

I still dont understand why people would want to graduate early if they can afford to be in college that extra semester or so.

If you are going to take 17 hours of classes do not work at all because you will not have time to study or read your materials thus causing you to fail and screw up the whole reason why you took 17 hours to begin with.

Well, in my case. I pay my own education. I have experience and (If I graduate in Summer) a degree. I also live in a part of the country where there are many jobs for CS graduates. For once, I guess, I'd like to just focus on my job and not having to worry about school.

That is actually what I am leaning to do if I take all 17 credits.

You should take the 17 hours this summer and not work at all. Focus entirely on your studies, graduate early, and you should be able to earn enough money to pay off the loan you would have taken very quickly.

EDIT: plus you'll be paying less for the classes than if you were to split it up between semesters.

I was originally going to take only 4 credits and take 12 in the fall. I don't go to NIU. I go to school, work and live in VA.

I used to take 18 hrs while working part time. Only you know how well you can handle it. I did fine, but I wouldn't do it the same over again.

What's the maximum number of credits allowed during summer? Talk to people in your school who've taken summer courses. It's not a joke and better be damned sure you can do it.

i agree with the others. finish summer school now so you can get your degree and earn more quicker. depending on which courses you're taking summer school pass I and pass II, you may be able to work part time. it's totally up to you but if you end up with 2 easy general ed. courses for one pass, you should definitely be able to work part time for that one pass (so try and lump bio, geography, etc. together)

The max is 18. None of my friends has tried this before, that's why I am asking here to see if anybody here has tried it.

Good thing is that they are Gen Eds. Just to make it clear, If I do it it'd be my first semester not working and only studying. I have been working almost full time and taking 16 credits every semester now for four years. My GPA is 3.35 right now (My only C in my 3rd year screwed me up), I believe I can do it but there is like a voice in my head telling me to be careful with this decision
