YAC(hemistry)Thread - catalysts

in the reaction NO ---> N2 + O2, reaction rates level off after a certain concentration of NO.

using a platinum catalyst, the reaction can be sped up, why?

my original thought was that the oxygen attempts to oxidize the platinum, but can't because its inert. i guess that would go along w/ BD2k3's answer

the generic answer of "lowering activation energy" is not what im looking for, as i already realize that is one thing 🙂

Thanks

I dont think it is fully understood, but the working hypothesis is that the Pt sheet aligns the molecules in such a way that they are more likely to meet and collide in the proper orientations to react with each other, rather than just leaving it up to total chance.
