Just switched from DSL to cable. Speed difference is phenomenal!

Previous:
Earthlink through Sprint DSL
advertised D/L: 512 kbps (actual 455 kpbs)
advertised U/L: 128 kbps (actual 134 kbps)
total price: 49.99mo (39.99 + 10.00 for ISP)

Now:
Earthlink through Cable (Time Warner)
advertised D/L: 3 mbps (actual 2535 kpbs)
advertised U/L: 384 kbps (actual 367 kbps)
total price: 29.99mo for 6mo then 41.99mo

Moral: shop around! (I should have a long time ago)

Nice. Glad you got the real pipe now. DLS rates can vary due to your distance to the main switch or something....Cable always rox.

The supplied modem is a Scientific Atlanta (WebSTAR) DPX110.
Anyone know if it's tweakable? or should I just leave well enough alone? :)

Previous:
ntl cable
advertised D/L: 600 kbps (actual 200 kpbs if lucky)
advertised U/L: 128 kbps (actual 110 kbps)
total price: 24.99mo

Now:
Pipex ADSL
advertised D/L: 1 mbps (actual 1100 kpbs)
advertised U/L: 256 kbps (actual 256 kbps)
total price: 32.99mo

In the UK, ADSL rocks over cable, especially ntl cable

200kbps to 1100kbps, very well worth your 8 dollars per month (or is that pounds).

Still hoping to see $20 per month broadband one day.

hhhmmmm, what to download now with my new found speed.........

Whoops, yeah, that is pounds :)

It's nice when downloading drivers/windows updates, means i'm not waiting around as long now when setting up a computer :) Also better for game patches etc ;)

I switched from 384/1.5 DSL to 128/? Cable. I think it's well worth losing some upload because I'm getting around 3 times the download speed that I used to. It's pretty cool.

I can get either SBC DSL or Comcast Cable.

Comcast however, is totally out of the question because 1) No way I'm subscribing to their overpriced, spanish-laden channel lineup, 2) $60/mo for non-cable subscribers for cable modem vs. $26.95/mo for DSL, and 3) Comcast is stupid.

DSL owns is stability and overall speed (Around here anyway) My 1.5 /256 connection stomps all over the cables advertised 3.0/128. Most of the time the cable around here is worse than 56k performance. I know several that have swithched and truly regret it. I have had DSL for 2.5 years and it has been solid as a rock, same speed everyday, all the time.

OTOH, I had DSL for about a year and it was completely flaky (although the speed was constant....when the connection was up). I switched to Comcast cable and consistenly get about 3.0/256 with zero downtime thus far (about 2 years). Cable kicks ass when there aren't too many people sharing your bandwidth, but YMMV. I just happen to live in a non-techy neighborhood; most people have dish TV and dialup.

I like my Verizon DSL better than my old Adelphia Cable.

I think it depends on the area you are in though.

I loved my cable modem when I first got it cuz no one else in the area had it, so I was up to 1000Kbps or higher.

Well, that dipped in the past year or so to about 600 - 900kbps.

I am now in a DSL area and I tried it. It is a consistant 1.4Mbps.

Cable was: $55 per month
DSL: $30 per month

DSL is better for me.

I'd have to agree that in the Miami area, DSL through Bellsouth is superb, whereas cable has yet to be implemented in many areas and is very unreliable because of outages due to the weather (t-storms and the like).

Comcast rocks with the current speed lift.
I have no cable TV, but I'm only paying $30 a month. :)
