YAC(ar)T: Service engine came on

clamum

Lifer
I was coming home last night and the Service Engine light came on in my car for about 10 seconds. I was about to pull off the road and shut the car off but it went out so I kept going (I was maybe a mile from home anyways). I have a 1991 Chevrolet Lumina 4-door.

So I was wondering if it would be safe to drive to town, which is about a 10 or so minute drive. Say if I checked the engine coolant level or something else that's easy to check and they were OK?

Check ALL the fluids to make sure they're OK, and if the car isn't doing anything serious like smoke in the exhaust, it's probably alright for a short drive.

it should be safe to drive, but take it to an autozone or the like and have the codes checked to find out why it came on.

Seconded. Also, check your gas cap. A loose one could cause the car to throw a code. But yeah, if the fluids and all other outward signs are okay, just drive over to Autozone to use their OBDII scanner.

OK...

A similar thing happen to my mom's car recently. The light came on and stayed on though. A mechanic said to check a few things and if they were OK than it was OK to drive. It turned out it had spark plugs that needed replacing.

OBD2 didn't exist in 1991😉

And you sure as hell don't need a code scanner to get them. In my car its called a piece of wire and and list of codes😉 I'm guessing the Chevy is similar.
