so..i wanted a bike to go to college for since part of the course is conducted in a campus that is located in the suburbs.

question 1:how hard is it to learn to ride the bike until i can be assured that i wont hurt myself(through stupidity, panic, etc)?

question 2:the bikes budget is around 5000aus$ which is equivalent to 4000us$, how reliable will the 2000+year bikes be?(buying second hand since once i leave australia i will sell it again, no need to buy new and kill myself with depreciation)

question 3:is there such a thing as international bike riding license?, i know there is driving licenses that are international, and also how long do they last(1 year 2 year etc)before renewing

question 4:does student insurance cover injuries from accidents etc?

question 5:what's your experience when learning to ride bikes for the first time, and also what kind of bike did you use to do so?

any pointers would be welcome, such as how to balance the front and rear brake during emergency, etc
 
For clarification... you are in Australia for college? Where is your home country? Or are you an Australian resident attending college in a different region from your home?

If you have to ask this, you shouldn't be getting a 600cc sport bike.

not to threadjack, but the only bike i've ridden on was a 50CC moped. it was one of the scariest things ever. my brother gave me virtually no training on it and i had to ride it around honolulu for a day or two. i would like to learn to ride on it sometime, but i thought 50CC's was enough for me to learn on.

Agreed. Honestly, I'd look at getting something with ABS...something that isn't a super sport.

I can't think of many small bikes (<600 cc) with ABS, CB400? Although wikipedia notes it has only been available in Australia from 2008...

In the 600cc range there is the 650 Bandit, the SV650, and others...

(1)- Forget a sport bike, let alone a 600.

(2)- Get a cruiser, something with a more upright seating position / better visibility (for you and for other drivers to see you) / better comfort.

(3)- Wear proper gear. Realize that your skill as a rider is utterly irrelevant if someone else does something stupid that involves you in an accident, there are countless ways that it will be simply unavoidable. Think of all the times you've ever been out driving or riding in a car, and someone in another vehicle cuts you off with an inch to spare, slips you, rear-ends you, pulls out in front of you, slams on their brakes out of nowhere, or flies by you at warp 10. Now imagine all of those times again, but this time you're riding a small clump of metal, with only negligible protection from injury.

ABS isn't necessary, just a bike with more than an on/off switch for the brakes. Every sportbike I've ridden has had VERY touchy brakes.
 
yeah i agree that maybe a 600 cc is too much but i will be learning with my brothers 250cc ninja for a month or two before i buy my own and also be attending some riding courses, of course full gear is always mandatory.
yes i am in australia for college, my home country is indonesia.
http://home1.gte.net/res0ak9f/bike.htm that is a very scary website there, but i do agree that teenagers on the road with their cellphones sending photos of their boobs are one of the biggest road hazards.

and uh..that site has decreased my will for getting a bike by a bit.

i only asked that because i totally don't have any experience of riding a bike before, but rest assured that i won't learn on a 600cc bike, since my brother also said that i'm insane and offered to teach me how to ride with his 250cc so hopefully after 2 months i should get the hang of it
