YABT: looking for a new one

So, yeah, I am currently looking to buy a new bike. I used to have a GT avalanche 2.0, but it was stolen off my gf's back porch, so I'm out to find a new one. I dont want to spend much more than $600, and (hopefully) want to find either a road bike or front shock mtn bike. Trek seems a tad expensive, so right now I'm looking at other GT models...

Suggestions anyone???

i was going to buy a bike for college, but i'm going to use my brothers' old crappy one. i have to spend like $200 on repairs probably. it needs new gears, pedals, brakes, and tires probably.

it's awesome. i hate spending $$$ bling $$$.

any trek bike that is about $450 or $500 is going to be great bike. unless you want some speed demon bike or a recumbent.

I've got a fisher marlin with locking front shocks that I like because I can use it for both in town or on trails. Retail is $520 but I think the new models are coming out in about a month so you might want to wait.

depends, do you want a road bike or a mtn bike? pick one first...

if you are going to be in boston - are the roads good there where you can ride a road bike? or arent a lot of the roads kind of crappy and cobblestone? then you should get a mtn bike.

i'd get a mtn bike with lockable shocks. that way you can turn it on/off depending on what kind of road you are on.
