Recently I am on the quest of searching for the ultimate dark beer.... or actually just want to find out which one taste better :). Upon entering my local Albertson I found an abundance and varieties of dark beer and don't know which one to start with. I am not gonna buy all of them, so I want your opinion...

btw: These are the ones that I already bought.

Guiness Dark (the one with a whirler thing inside the bottle)
Guiness Stout
Modelo Dark (Modelo is the marker of Corona, which was bought by Anheiser-Busch recently)
Asahi Dark
Heineken Dark (for some reason I think this one will suck)

Dark beers, yum!
Guiness stout is good, I haven't tried any of the others. I find that the best dark beers are microbrews so I think you should try a few micro-brews until you find one you like :)

yes I would agree, I went to a brewery/pub/bar place in Korea Town, CA and their beer is cheap!! a pint is like 3.5 bucks and it taste good too... a pitcher costs like 12.95 or something like that. Quality beer and high cheap-to-get-drunk factor.

albertson's wont carry any decent dark beers other than the guiness. Try to find a specialty beer store. As was mentioned, Sam Smith is hard to beat. anything belgian is good. try kwak and chimay

Fuller's ESB. Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout. I forget what Leinenkrugel's dark one is called, but it was tasty.

Ehhh, I wasnt hugely impressed with the 4 pack of it that I had. It wasnt too heavy for me or anything, but the taste just wasnt as good as I was expecting, and certainly not $2.40/bottle good. Maybe vi_edit got my expectations too high, I dont know. I remain in the Guinness camp until I find something more to my liking. I may try some Bell's Stout this weekend...

Of those choices, I'd pick the Guiness Stout. But you really shouldn't overlook the micros, like everybody else is saying. :) Where I live we have a brew called Captain Bastard's Oatmeal Stout. Not only does it have the coolest name ever and a picture of a pig in a pirate hat with an eye patch on the label, but it's the best damn dark beer I've ever had.

There's no substitute for trial and error .. everybody has different tastes. My roommate and I buy a new beer every weekend if we can .. our bottle collection is lookin better all the time.
