What's the difference between getting drafted from high school/college and just trying out in the majors until you make it into the majors?

Also, if you don't get drafted to play football or basketball from college, is there anything like the minors in baseball where you can keep playing until you make it in the majors or pro?
 
i believe the european league is the NBA's "minors", and football has plenty of resources to choose players from.

The difference between getting drafted out of hgih school? About 10 million in signing bonus's and special treatment from the organization?

edit: if you haven't noticed, there is a SH!Tload of "capable" NFL players out there. Over a hundred report to each teams training camp, and they have those "reserve squads" or practice teams or whatever they call them which is basically like their own backup team. Rarely do you hear about teams dipping into things like the arena football league.
