YABackpackT: What's your opinion on slings?

Inspired by beer's thread.

As I said in that thread, my old JanSport is due for a replacement. Seeing as the strap is tearing from wearing it one-shouldered, I thought that maybe a sling would be a good solution. They're less bulky than normal backpacks, and are made to be carried on one shoulder, which I guess is good for me.

I don't usually have to carry a lot at school -- several binders and notebooks, a couple textbooks and sketchbooks -- so I have no problem downsizing my storage so severely. I figure I can re-re-re-reinforce the strap on my old JanSport and keep it for outdoors and traveling (I currently use it for that plus school), since it's so versatile.

But what about the look? Do you guys think that slings are odd? Maybe a little too metro? I honestly don't pay attention to others' backpacks, so I don't know how they come across. I'm willing to wager no one pays attention to my backpack, either, so I don't know why I care about how it looks. :p

Specifically, I was thinking of the JanSport Grind. Yay or nay? I see it has an "Adjustable Velcro® padded crossover shoulder strap". Is that sissy Velcro or will it actually hold?

I hate sling backpacks . . . I think they look a bit too "fad"ish, IMO. I prefer my messenger bag.

LOL Computer dorks discussing backpack fashions . . . what an age we live in!:D

That was my feeling, too, but they seem useful and I wanted to see what other dork-minded individuals think. :p

I have an Oakley Sandbag. I wear it to work and back everyday and usually when I visit friends. I graduated so I only have it on me for 10 minutes max a day. Anyway, I really like it. I guess the logical assumption is that it's bad for your back but I haven't noticed any aches or pains. Nor do I feel like I am leaning to a certain side due to the extra weight.

I don't think it's fadish at all. If anything, the messenger bags are much more a fad.

I like them alot, and they seem to look pretty cool on others. All I can say is give it a try and see what you think.

Well, I ordered the thing from Amazon today just for the hell of it. $34.99 from Eastbay ($6.99 shipping) versus like $49.99 plus 8.25% sales tax from Academy here. I went and tried it out first, and it's pretty cool. It fits really well on your shoulder, but for some reason I expected it to be useful for either side -- but it's left only. Whatever, no problem.

I may still mail in my other pack to see what they do with it. I wonder if they'd fix the straps or just replace it.
