Typical person saying a micro is automatically better than a macro.I've tasted tons of shitty micros. My sister lives in Oregon the microbrew capitol if the country and she visits once a month and I give her money to bring me 10 different brews a month and sure some are very good but many are very bad. There's macros I like as well. I guess if you want to be elitist about it and only drink micros then go right ahead.

I wouldn't say that. I've had some microbrews that I found quite revolting; I'd much rather drink PBR than a sour flemish ale. However, the taste ceiling for macros is much lower than micros. You are never in your life going to find a macrobrew that I think tastes better than, or as good as, Stone's Imperial Russian Stout. Or Weihenstephaner Hefe-Weissbier. Or Trappist Rochefort 10. You just aren't. Budweiser is not going to come out with a product that is in the same stratosphere of flavor as those, and hundreds of other, microbrews.

So yes, it's true that something being a microbrew does not automatically make it better than a macro. But the best microbrews are so much better than the best macrobrews that it's difficult to compare them.

Incidentally, I don't drink only microbrews. In fact, for the past few months I've been on a fairly small income, so I've been primarily drinking PBR (until medical issues caused me to quit drinking altogether). I recognize the need for cheap beer. But if money were no object, I'd probably never drink a macro again.

Newcastle isn't really worth the price. Unless you're buying beer at a gas station, there are better options at that price point. I'd probably take the 2 pbrs over the 1 newcastle

is fat tire readily available on the east coast? i'd say it's better than sam but dunno if you can get it over there.

I've seen it around but I've never bought it. As for how widespread the availability is, can't really say. Most of the large grocery stores probably stock it. I've been pretty lucky in the Kroger and Ingles around me have pretty large selections to choose from. :thumbsup:



And yes, yuengling if you are on the east coast. Hard to beat for the price - $6.

I came in here to say Fat Tire. I've had that in various parts of the US, so I assume it's widely available and pretty yummy.

I just bought a 12pk of Newcastle for $16 at Target. That's $1.33/beer. Totally worth it over any standard american piss

Sam Adam started out as a microbrew, but has grown into near nationwide distribution, but SA is one clear price class above the real "mainstream" pisswater from Bud/Miller/Coors/PBR/etc, so you can't really compare it to them.

All of the other present or past microbrews, like Fat Tire, do not have anythinbg close to ubiquitous nationwide distribution and so can't be considered both because of that and price.

One beer that has fairly wide but not nationwide distro, at least on the East Coast, is Yuengling . . . and at a price at or BELOW that of Bud et al, it beats the competition for taste and quality hands down. It's not even close.

But I guess Yuengling is still just a regional favorite so it also can't be the answer.

All the mainstream beers at that "mainstream" price below Sam Adams but with true national distro suck, imho.

Pretty much. The stuff you'll see most people buying with lottery tickets and cigarettes is Coors Light, Miller Light or Bud Light. If they can't cover the lotto tickets and cigs it's Keystone Light (or Ice) or Natural Light. It's all garbage, and I look right down my nose at them all.

I generally drink micro brews, but sometimes the mood strikes me to buy a 12 pack of MGD. So, I'll go with that as a suggestion. It's certainly not going to blow anyone away with it's complexity, but as an overall agreeable tasting beer, it's not too bad in my opinion.

Many of the beers people are touting are not available coast to coast.

I don't think it's common enough in most areas to be considered a mainstream American beer. I do like it though. It's very common here in Texas of course, but vacationing in California and Oregon, and on layovers in Denver .. didn't see it.

Sam Adams, Killians, Blue Moon, Yuengling etc. are what I consider decent mainstream American Beer. The ones you listed, I'd probably consider budget American Beer for the most part.
