Decided to go with Lindemans Framboise and Young's Double Chocolate Stout for a sort of a "chocolate covered raspberry" feel. I'm also a fan of framboise + Guinness (black and purple?), Guinness + Cider, Hoegaarden (or a number of other white's like Southhampton's Double White) + framboise for a "Dirty Ho." The list goes on, I've made some pretty tasty combo's of belgian style ales (even tripels) and IPAs. I'm wondering what you guys like to mix and if you've found anything you really enjoy.

This is the first time I've ever heard of anyone mixing beers like that.

I think it's a man-rule that you don't mix beers. Mixing fruit juices is ok... I love cran-apple... but mixing one foo-foo beer into another I'm pretty sure will result in loss of man-card points.

I'm pretty sure this is venturing into apple-tini territory.

I'm not talking about mixing domestic macrobrews. ;) It's actually relatively common, I'm sure other ATOT members do, probably just a bad time to post. :)

Same here! I like many of the European beers, but I like how they taste...and never thought of mixing them before!!!

And you probably drink miller light like real men? :p No serious replies other than the classic black and tan (I completely forgot to list it as I don't often drink it). :) I know there are some beer snobs around that must do some interesting things.

Saying "Mixing beers is a really stupid thing to do. Unless youre a chick" is a really stupid thing to do. Unless you're a chick.

Black & Tan, end of argument.

Neither am I...

I consider myself quite the beer snob. I have never heard of, nor has it ever occured to me, to mix beers. I don't know why you'd think it's common.

Like I said... this is in apple-tini territory.

I like adding some of those bigger bottled smoked beers to regular ales when finishing a whole one becomes too intense.

The Dogfish Head Alehouse in Maryland mixes up their beers all the time. World wide stout & 120 min, 90 & 120, chickory & 60/90, etc.

Belgian gueuze beers are mixes themselves. They take different aged lambics, & blend them together for a more interesting experience.

At the BBF we were mixing Cantillon apricot/raspberry/cherry lambics with their gueuze, or walking to the table nextdoor & dropping those in some Orval pale ale.

Black & tans are bottled. They style is marketed by several different breweries. It doesn't get more obvious then that. People have been doing it for generations.

If you're more interested in maintaining your image, rather then trying something different & potentially interesting, then you are more of a snob then anyone you label as such.

The only beer "mixes" I've ever tried are Black and Tan (Bass and Guinness) and Half and Half (Harp and Guinness).

Like Conquito said, Black and Tans are bottled, they've been mixed for years upon years, I don't know why you'd think it's uncommon. I"m not quite sure how much of a beer snob you really must be if you've never heard of a mixed beer. Guinness + Cider and Guinness + Framboise are pretty common.

Haha look at the wiki cited drinks wiki

I've heard it's a half and half in Ireland due to an old British Army force called black and Tan used to dispell uprisings in Ireland....

a popular mix in Switzerland (I was tooling around the lake Geneva...errr Leman region a few years back) was mixing a wheat beer with a lemon syrup. They called it "Panacea" (pronounced: Pa-nash; but I'm assuming similar spelling to panacea, or at least the equivalent in French).

no different than sticking a lemon wedge in the same type o beer. not a beer/beer mix though.

Black and Tans are made fresh out of the tap. the dual colored layer is the point of the drink, and you can't achieve this when bottled.

so no, a true black and tan is not bottled, and is a very popular widespread beer/beer mix.

At least in Germany their version (Shandy/Radler) is more a straight 50/50 beer + lemonade as opposed to syrup. It's actually quite good, I've made a few at home myself. (With weak American beer though)

The beer snob in me would agree with you, yes, black and tan's are a porter and a
pale ale poured from a tap. But there are companies that do bottle what they consider a black and tan - essentially mixed on the brewery side.

Yuengling for example, bottles a "black and tan." Text The fact that some breweries actually bottle a "black and tan" indicate that the mix has been around for quite some time.

No kidding? I'd be interested to hear some of your favorites then. I imagine you have a pretty eclectic palate?

Other than a black and tan, I don't think I've ever mixed beers. An IPA/Belgian combo just sounds bizarre to me, even though IPA is my favorite beer and I like many Belgian ales.
