YAAVT - If I have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium, do I still need IS software?

I bought Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium a few months back, looks like it does a very good job. I already had NIS, and it still found pretty nasty stuff hidden on my comp about which NIS apparently didn't have any idea. NIS is expiring in 19 days, wondering if I should renew NIS or Malwarebytes by itself will be enough

Since they are both giving you real-time protection, I wouldn't run more than one at a time anyway. Pobably time to say goodbye to norton.

I'd probably stick with AMWB over Norton. I would also use some of the other free AV software available out there like Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware as well as MSE (if you are running Windows.)

Personally, I have MSE and SAS running on the computer, and I manually run AMWB and Spybot every so often to catch stuff the others may have missed.

Yes! You should have and run either a good AV or a good IS! And you can run both it and yr MBAM in real time, I did for a long time, but, because of annoying issues in the latest MBAM build/gui, I now only use it to scan. It did not conflict tho. You might, tho be driven mad by pop ups/warnings.

When I had both MBAM pro and Superantispyware pro....meaning I could run them in real time, I also had a good AV, can't remember which.

I emailed Superanti, they were fabulous, told them what I had, asked them, and they said, absolutely, U can run either us or MBAM in real time with yr AV, but, you should not run BOTH OUR app and MBAM at the same time in real time.....they added, we hope you choose US.

MBAM is amazing, but it still does not afford the real time protection of Norton, esp Norton IS.

Hi again,its the next day....

Was looking for addtional confirmation of what I used to do, run MBAM in real time along with Norton IS.....came upon something from an Administrator on MBAM forum:

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=99155

AV and top antimal apps really not the same thing and again, I never had a problem using them in concert. Esp with an IS which includes a firewall.....very important thing.

hmm... interesting, I guess there is some value in keeping both, but I doubt I need to spend $$ to do that. I guess I can replace NIS with something cheaper or free.

Hey!

There truly is value (esp for worriers like me)...but you are right: I haven't kept up since committing to Norton, but there are still some highly rated free AVs out there....and you do also need a good firewall.

Search "Best free AV" and use all (K, not all but a lot of) the hyperlinks to come away with good assessment. Check real time protection, detection rates, etc.

Again, for me, this last build of MBAM in real time made my head explode with its notifications and as if by fiat it demands you run it only one way.

I actually changed my license and now using the free version. But, recently, it had major update and went back to the pro, all by itself....so, I hadda undo my license again.

Props for being as careful as U R!

I did not know Bitdefender had free anything. But, it seems it does and is highly rated. Still not sure in any free ones include a firewall.

And, here's PC Mag's take on the not free ones:

Avast, Avira, AVG, Bit Defender, Panda Cloud, FortiNet FortiClient, as well as a few others have free versions you could try. Some of these may come with "extras" like Chrome or toolbars so be sure to pay attention during the install.

I've always stuck with Avira or Avast on my machine and my relatives.

^ So is antivirus enough? or should I look for IS software?

I think in this arena, there are no hard and fast rules.

I ended up with Norton IS after much delving and it works for me.

But, it's possible to get freewares for each function: a good free AV, a good free firewall.....and then, run yr MBAM Pro in concert.

I used to use Comodo firewall on my lappy. I remember it being good.

The prices for top rated suites, I now see, vary a lot. U can also sometimes get get coupons.

Were I to switch to free, given what I just saw on PC mag, I guess I would try the free Bitdefender I din know existed...
http://www.bitdefender.com/solutions/free.html

..... and with it, a highly rated free firewall.

It's confusing, right? U bet. Maybe you should experiment with free and monitor the results over time of this or that? You come across like someone who would be keen in observing.

No one app fends off everything or has 100% detection rate.

And again, I would never be without MBAM no matter what else I run.

Here's wut Gizmo (the freewares guy) says about free firewalls, it seems Comodo still ranks high:

Basically all an IS would add is a firewall. Windows firewall may be enough depending on your needs.

If you can run with a limited user account. Also keep your OS and all of your programs up to date. Especially Java and Flash. If you don't need Java it can disabled and/or uninstalled.
