YAATOTAAT: How do I position myself to be accepted by a MA/PHD program I'm interested in?

Once I receive my undergrad I want to go straight into a masters>Phd program at UIC in Soc.Psych.
I understand that getting INTO a program can be competitive... how do I find out how best to position myself to be accepted?
