YAAT: Onkyo HT-S780

I'm looking for a decent HT system to go with my new HDTV, and I've read good reviews about this one. And for $399, it won't break the bank. The room I would be using it in is pretty small, so I don't know if this would be overkill. Would I be satisfied with this HTIB?

Where is it $399? I've seen it for around $380 at CC, but looks like they don't have a good price at the moment.

I think it's one of the best options in the pricerange. The strongest point is the receiver that you could continue to use later on if you wanted to upgrade your speakers someday.

We had an Onkyo HTIB for a short time - it was about the same price range but just a 5.1. I thought it sounded pretty good for movies, but wasn't terribly accurate for music. We ended up returning it and upgrading, but for a HT it was pretty good for the price.

My room is 12 X 14. I have the Denon 3805, Def Tech BP 2006s, BPX rears and a CLR 3000 center. The Denon puts out 120 WPC which is fine in most cases. But I found it lacking with loud music. I added a Parasound 200 x 2 amp on the fronts and it really lit up the main speakers. Now I can crank my Floyd laser discs and watch them on my Panny 50" plasma. I thought the TV would be too big for the room but it's fine.

I have that model and it sounds pretty good. I don't know much about audio, but for music it sometimes sounds *slightly* muffled, as if not ALL of the frequences are perfectly balanced -- but I also play music using the 7.1 speakers so maybe its a digital effect. For games its amazing.

Only other issue -- it gets VERY hot.. which worries me a bit, but so far so good.

I just ordered one of the refurb HT-S780's off of Onkyo. Since I'm new to HT, and the fact that Onkyo doesn't include the cables with its refurb sets, can someone point me in the right direction for what I'll need to get my system up and running when it arrives?

If it doesn't come with any cables, to get a HT set working you'll need speaker wire and an RCA cable to hook up the subwoofer. Those are the cables you need to get everything hooked together, but you'll need different ones to hook up different sources to it depending on what you have already and what you're hooking up.

Cablesforless has affordable speaker wire.

If you have RCA cables already, those will work for hooking up the sub. If you don't have one of decent length, one of these will work.

Make sure to check out the refub version too. $360-ish for this set and a DVD player is a pretty good deal especially for the receiver you're getting (basically this one)

I went with a Pioneer VSX-1015TX, which seems to be replaced with the VSX-1015TX. My main concern was the Video Conversion feature, which "up-converts S-Video and composite video into component video, for a simpler, higher-quality video connection to your TV or Panel." The need for that becomes quickly apparent, when you plug your camcorder (or other video source) into the front of your receiver, and it doesn't have a path through to your monitor or VCR.

It also has Automatic MCACC, which "actually measures and calibrates your audio system for sonic perfection specifically for your living room, regardless of shape or size, automatically."
