Living in an apartment does have their disadvantages...

Anyhow, I live in a 1br with a shared wall between a 1br unit and another shared wall with a 3 br unit. Everything is nice and dandy a fair majority of the time except during certain occasions of when my neighbors decide to party. Both neighbors have subwoofers and whenever they do decide to use it I can hear the bass reverberate through my whole unit..

With my 1br neighbor, my android phone (audalyzer) measured an ambient noise level of -40db with the usual being around -52db. With my 3br neighbors, I measure around -46db. IIRC, a 10db difference means twice the intensity. So, the ambient noise level does intensify by two. I might be wrong here however.

Now, the complex itself has a rule where any noise past 11:00pm would not be tolerated. The times when the subwoofer are used are usually for the most part before that time. But, the usually use their sound systems for extended periods of time ranging from 30 minutes to a few hours.

The thing I'm hesitant on doing is calling management. The people that would enforce the noise are a family (a cleaning woman and a handyman with a child). They both get worked to the point where they're doing OT w/o pay to make deadlines. Thus, I would rather only call them if it's a necessity. The manager is this hardnosed, stern woman who keeps claiming she would easily evict tenants if they showed any signs of failure to follow the rules. However, I've never seen such an occasion. She is friendly when everything is in order, but rough up her feathers and she's another person.

So, would you be complaining? Or, what would you be doing?

Cliffs:
- Both my neighbors have sound systems with subwoofers
- One neighbor gives me a 12db difference in ambient noise
- The other neighbor gives me a 6 db difference.
- Apartment complex has a 11:00pm no noise rule.
- Most of the noise is usually before the no noise rule, but sometimes goes past 11:00pm.
- What should I be doing?

I would call the apartment office every single time their music or television is audible. If that didn't work, i would call the non-emergency police number every time.

There is absolutely no reason for anyone in an apartment complex to own a subwoofer.

Either complain, or type up a letter and make it look like it came from the management and slip it under the doors of your neighbors telling them there have been complaints.

Or suck it up and deal with it.

I complained so many times to our management office about noise and they never did anything. They threaten to evict on a piece of paper but never follow through. Just hope you have a level-headed landlord who can handle the situation like it should be handled if you do complain.

I got up at 10:07 this morning and was playing music at a medium-ish volume. The people below me started banging on the ceiling or something. It was funny.

I remember shopping for a sub and it listed "must own house to purchase" on the box. When I was shopping for an amp for my car, it said "must live in rural area" on the box. Crazy world.

Have you tried talking to your neighbors?

I probably should give it a go the next time it happens. However, this guy has been given a talking by the landlord before on a few occasions. I'll probably run this through the apartment manager and get clarifications on the rules before doing something.
