x800gt's competitive edge seems to only be a lower price than 6600gt, but at new egg they're the same price.

speedwise, it depends on the game to determine which is faster (doom3 in favor of 6600gt, hl2 to x800gt, etc).

i have seen most ppl say "x800gt is better... ATi released x800gt to combat the 6600gt so that means it's better!", but with speed and price being about the same for both, 6600GT comes into the lead with SM3.0 support.

so should i get the 6600gt (im really not sure if my view of these two cards is correct...)??

any pointers are appreciated!!

well heres another review pitting the x800gt and the 6600gt here

have a read, it'll tell you all what u want to know

its pretty even stevens, though bit-tech found they could play with more AA or AF than the 6600gt in some cases.

basically the X800GT's exist beacause ATi have a lot of left over R420/R423/R480 chips that werent fully functional (ie they didnt have all 16 pipes, but had at least 8 fully working ones).

once the supply of these semi-duds runs out then supply of these cards will dry up.

i mean in all honesty i dont think it matters which you get (long as its not the crippled AIW version with only 128mb of ram n 128bit memory). the SM3 point is rather moot since the 6600gt doesnt really have the Horsepower to take advantage. unless you run at low resolution.

but if u want me to say which i would get then, i think the x800 would be mine. it has a 256bit memory interface which is  for hi res and AA and AF, and they dont seem to overclock to bad either.

but neither will see through gamings thick n thin......these cards are already pushed as it is, newer games are only going to hurt more

EDIT: the 6600gt has been king of its divison since it came out, and i think ATi finally have an answer. its a late answer.....very late, but i think its a credible answer

Get the x800. If the rebate is still there, theres an MSI one at zippzoom for around 120. Outperforms the 6600GT.

I hate bit-tech, they show you no numbers, only their opinions on "playable settings"

I repeat, I hate I hate I hate bit-tech.

Guru3d.com has a sweet review, seems the x800 GT is a tad better everywhere except Chronicles of Riddick and Doom 3 where it gets mauled at 10 fps less in riddick and 20 fps less in Doom 3. It appears FEAR is favoring the 6600 GT too, though guru3d did not review the FEAR demo.

That's my recommendation too. Not the x800gt, but the x800 - it's faster than either of the two other cards, and is usually available for around $150 after all the rebates going on.

They're about equal...it all depends on if you'd rather have Sm3 or not. (or maybe 256bit vs 128?)

get the x800gt, there's no point in having SM3.0 if it won't even be playable. The x800gt is also a fairly great overclocker.

Exactly. The reviews for the X800GT only make it seem a bit better than the 6600GT. Just get the x800.

I want proof that Sm3 wont be usable in some form on a 6600gt in next gen. Can anyone back that up? no.

the 6600gt is also a fairly great OCer...

SM3.0 crap...

it's only a selling point if u absolutely plan on NOT upgrading your gpu in the near future...might come in handy if ur looking for a gpu for the long haul tho....

Well the 6600GT not only supports SM3.0 it also supports FP16HDR & Purevideo. (You could get the MSI and get VIVO as well)
