I'm going to finally get engaged to my girlfriend of 7+ years. I know she will say yes to even a plain band, but I would like to get something special. She has told me before that she wants the ring to be unique. I'm not sure if that is true or not, or maybe she was trying to give me an out (ease my guilt) for not being able to afford a giant rock. My budget maxes at around $1600. I would be willing to upgrade it in a few years when I can afford something better...

To this end, I have been looking at vintage pieces. I found an old 1930's wedding set in a nice deco style that is definately unique but quite attractive. You'd be hard pressed to find anything like it today. I think it's a beautiful ring set. However, the rings are old, and will show their age. I was even thinking I could spin it a little with a story of reusing a symbol of love from the past or something... at the price, I would definately be getting more for my money than a new ring at the same pricepoint.

My question is, will a woman prefer something vintage and unique like this or would should prefer a lesser, but brand new, ring?

Again, I know she'll say yes, but I don't want her to feel cheated or anything. Let me know guys and girls...

Sounds great to me! As long as the ring is in good shape, I'd say it's a great idea.
I did the same thing for my wife. I bought a ring from the 1800's with old european cut diamonds at a debeers sponsered jewelry auction, and she hadn't taken it off except for cleaning in 24yrs🙂 I've asked her several times over the years if she wanted to upgrade it to something better, and she's always said no.

Talk with a jeweler about cleaning the ring or ask what else can be done to make the ring look new.

I just picked mine up yesterday. Got it off craigslist, was a killer deal and its a very old ring with history just like she wanted.

i have a 0.38 carat cultured blue diamond in a platinum four prong solitaire i'd sell to you for that much if you'd like 🙂 the stone is made by chatham, and i have an egl certificate. i originally purchased it off of www.diamondscultured.com

My wife would much prefer a vintage ring over something new. In fact, shes getting a ring for our 5 year coming up in April, and we're going to scour vintage antique/jewelry shops to find something she'd like (it's a little sad actually. She's too picky for me to find something myself that I know she'd like 😛). Her engagement ring belonged to her great great aunt and consists of a platinum band wrapped with 12 inset miners cut diamonds. It wouldn't be the most expensive thing nowadays, but I've never seen another like it and she loves it.

Anyway, I'd say go for it 🙂

DeBeers is a corrupt cartel that monopolizes the diamond trade. Buying new diamonds is feeding the monster, so if you have to have a diamond, buy a vintage one. Here's an old article about the diamond trade, but much of it is still true today. I'm holding on to my grandmother's ring, but I'll never buy a new diamond.

Well, you can buy synthetic diamonds for less than real diamonds now.
