Well, it still sounds as if they circumvented the reason there is signature required, to wit, leave it in responsible hands.Originally posted by: UNCjigga
]Our rowhouse is a little weird though--let me explain. The first floor (ground level) has its own private entrance. Floors 2-4 (I'm 2nd floor) have an iron staircase going up to a landing, and then a common door to a hallway. Units 2-4 all have their own door buzzer to let you know when someone wants to get in.
The common door is broken as of 2 weeks ago, when someone broke in and burgled Unit 3 (they skipped my unit because roommate was working from home at the time!) Hence my fears of sketchy neighborhood. Its not obvious, but if one pulls hard on the common door, it will open without a key.
Previously, if UPS had a package for someone in 2-4 they would buzz the unit for the owner to come down and open the door. If nobody came, they would buzz another unit, and if someone came down, they would sign for the package and leave it inside the door, next to the mailboxes for the recipient to pick up. After the break-in, my neighbors haven't been leaving the packages out, as the door has a large glass window and it would be easy to see packages sitting out in the hallway.
So, the point of all this, is that anyone who knows what happened (or the burglar himself) can be waiting inside the common door and wait for packages to arrive, posing as someone who lives there. I'm really hoping the driver wouldn't fall for it if its a regular route and he knows everyone here, but who's to say he does (he's never actually seen "me" before, hence why he wouldn't ask for ID!)

Dammit, UPS just told me they can't do anything unless I contact the shipper first! They want Newegg to initiate the inquiry, not the customer? Why? WTF is Newegg gonna do? UPS people here--is this standard practice? I don't understand why I can't' talk to the distro center/driver myself?? Even when I asked to do just that, they said the shipper needs to initiate an inquiry before I can schedule a driver follow-up.
edit: just sent an email form to Newegg.

You pay by CC?
Dispute the charge if Newegg doesn't hook you up.
Memo: Change the 'ship to' address to something commercial.

1. Ship to work if its 5 lbs or less.
2. If larger, call UPS and tell them to keep for customer pickup at distro center (way the fuck out in Landover, MD)
3. Pay more for FedEx. No offense to the competent UPS employees out there, but I've never had any problems with FedEx, ever. And their proof of signature seems to go a bit further.
Like I said, read the OP. Got in trouble after shipping a home theater system to the office, when mailroom bitched to HR, and HR kindly reminded me that the mailroom is not my personal shipping room, and that they would refuse any packages that weren't FedEx Next Day Air (all my legit business mail is FedEx Next Day, but I ain't paying for it out of pocket. Might as well buy retail then!)Originally posted by: alkemyst

Many places like CDW require delivery to the actual address on the shipment. They cannot be picked up or re-routed.
Why not have everything shipped to work if you have a history of stolen packages? That is what anyone would have done after the second time.
Dude, I work for a Fortune 10 company with 10,000 employees. Even with my MBA, 401k, and nice salary+bonus, I'm a nobody!Originally posted by: alkemyst
I saw the OP, but the way you wrote it with warehouse folks and crap I didn't know WTF you were talking about. Why couldn't they just call you to get you packages from the carrier instead of moving them.
I'd find a fucking new job if I was not important enough to have an expensive item shipped directly to me at the office.
I get packages almost daily from something as simple as a pack of batteries to 24" cube boxes of 75lb+ items.

that sucks, like I said I'd find a different job. I work for a fortune 400 only though so I don't know. With 10,000 employees the packages of a few should be a non-issue. More than likely all departments have different stuff coming and going.
it is what it is, but I'd then be forced to ship to someone else or get an attended mailbox at a pack and ship.
I order about 90% of my stuff online even my lawn mower came to my office.

Wow, you'd quit a job over something as petty as mail room policy?

OK, WTF UPS? Now I'm pissed.
Called again this morning, and the CSR immediately connected me with a "specialist" after giving him my case history. Well the specialist is now telling me that the package was left at the front door. WTF? "Well, why does it say signed for by (my name}? Doesn't that imply that somebody signed for it? Don't you leave the signature field BLANK if you leave it at the door?" I asked, incredulous. "No, she replies, not if you leave a note telling UPS to leave the package". I pause. "I never left a note, there has never been a note. They always leave an Infonotice if I'm not home." Then she dropped the bomb.
Get ready for it folks...
"You need to request in writing if you want packages held or a required signature."
So if that's the policy, why have I NEVER had to do that before? Why have I ALWAYS gotten the yellow sticky Infonotice when UPS misses me? And WHY would you track a package as "Signed by XXXXX" WHEN THEY NEVER SIGNED FOR IT????
Lesson learned. I'm done with UPS.
edit: I did ask them to contact the distro center and have them contact me and send the driver out if possible. She took my number, so I hope I get a call back but I'm not expecting much from her. Should I just try to contact the distro center directly?
Also, I wrote Newegg last night, and they are asking if I would like replacement or a refund. I told them to hold off while I clear things with UPS. Should I just take the replacement offer now? If I wait too long, will they think the matter is resolved?

My experience in the past was at a different address in a different state, but I digress. My current neighborhood is definitely one in transition. My condo costs $470,000--there are brand-new $600k condos being built next door less than 2 feet away, and new condos down the street going for $800k-$1.2 mil. That said, you still see a lot of 'ghetto' folk walking around.Originally posted by: alkemyst
the shipper needs to do it because it's their shipment. UPS wants to make sure the shipper that paid for the service is catered too.
In your explanation above, even if the outer door was bad...someone would have to know to just wait around, all the while not being questioned and hope UPS/FedEx was delivering to what appears to be a less that ideal place to live. If they were going to target this kind of thing, I think they'd go after higher end places where the chances of more valuable packages are.
Being you had experience with this in the past, you should know the procedures.
