YA? Trailer thread

I have a trailer; bearings on one side went bad.. first some squeeling, then, of course, the wheel locked up.

I'm reading that it takes a while - according to the website I was on, about an hour per wheel to clean the bearings, repack the bearings, etc. In my case, I'll have to remove the races (hitting them with an awl or something).

However, I also read that I can replace a hub in about 10 minutes. I've never done this job before, but will it be quicker to completely replace the bearings and races since I don't have to clean those parts (quicker than an hour)? Or, is it worth the time savings to just replace the hub?

Question 2: how much of a pita is it going to be to find replacement bearings/races? The trailer was homemade by someone, i.e. I doubt I'll be able to find part numbers.

Thanks!

Well, this sucks! Stupid things won't come off... Time for more googling...
Should I use a persuader (hammer)? Or did I miss something?

It has been a while, but I think the races and bearings both will have numbers on them that you can carry to a parts store and have them look up.

Good luck with it.

At this point I'd take it to a trailer supply/repair place and have it fixed.

Live and learn.. get one of those 'bearing buddies' they sell at wal-mart that keeps 'em greased.

Success! It's off. Just took a bit of gentle persuasion (BIG hammer) - the bearings had created a small groove on the axle that prevented anything from sliding past. Problem taken care of. A couple of grooves on the axle, but ohhh well. Off to the store to get new bearings, etc.

My question about repacking bearings, etc., has been answered.. it all just comes apart once the hub is off. No point in replacing the hub.
