I'm looking for a nice TBS game, but something a little on the simpler side. I've played a lot of them, Civ 2 3 and 4, galciv2, etc.

I like those, but right now I'm looking for something with more emphasis on battle tactics and such. Little or nothing in the way of things like economy, tech trees, morale etc, but a bit more stuff going on that checkers or chess (yes I know chess is actually incredibly complex)... A nice big map with a competent AI, where I can have a beer, listen to some tunes and kill the enemy. Graphics are low priority.

I've tried battle for wesnoth, but it hasn't really grabbed me yet. I get the feeling there's a Civ mod out there that I just don't know about yet. Fantasy or current or sf are all fine.

Have you tried the Total War series? Seems like it might be right up your alley.

I'd recommend Medieval II: Total War for starters.

How about turn-based tactics games? It sounds like the genre may be up your alley as well. This may be a little outdated, but you might want to check out Silent Storm.

Alpha centauri? Guess its as simple as you want it to be, build bases near green stuff, automate all the workers (its a lot like civ, bit better imo) and away you go.

Lords of the Realm pack on GoG is perfect for what you're describing. Dated graphics, but very fun and much simpler than total war.

I was looking for the same thing.

Picked up a game called Europa Universalis III. I haven't played it yet, but it looks like it'll be good.

Fantasy General
Elven Legacy (sequel)

Looked at them, but I thought they were sort of empire building with RTS elements?

Not exactly what I had in mind, but Silent Storm looks like something I'd really enjoy, thanks.

Heores of Might and Magic III on gog.com for $9.99 with all it's expansion packs.

Looks like a heavy mix with RPG, not that there's anything wrong with that. Any huge reason to go with III over II, or does it matter? Didn't know about gog.com, thanks for the tip.

Looks interesting... I've been playing a lot of Warlords III, so dated graphics aren't an issue.

I would say I'm sort of in the same boat. I liked the idea of the command and conquer games (built a bunch of stuff and then have it fight). The games are so fast paced though. I want something where I can watch things happen and enjoy it. I guess thats what a turn based strategy is? In which case, can you recommend a game? I've heard the civ games are fun. What about Age of empires? Etc.

Yeah, I like RTSs sometimes, but the idea that I need to click faster always bugged me. Like how Starcraft players worry about actions per minute. Or you forget about something and you're too busy to notice.

The civ games are great, very big and deep and in some cases games can stretch for days. Lots of things to do and plan (economy and tax, road and city building, research etc), but at your pace. GalCivII isn't terribly different - potentially very big, lots of depth, but a very different setting. Dunno about age of empires.
