My trusty Thinkpad is getting long in the tooth, so it seems like the right time to get it a friend. I'm building this machine for gaming (modern games), general futzing, and software development in VMware. The repeated mantra of this forum seems to be "buy what you need today", so I am not going to worry too much about socket obsolescence (unless I should (I don't upgrade very often)).

I would really like for this machine to be quiet while idling (loud during gaming is less of a problem). I spent some time reading SPCR and decided to use the P183 and its companion power supply, but if there's a better option, please let me know.

The parts:

i7 860
Gigabyte GA-p55-usb3, chosen randomly. What's better?
Radeon 5850
A randomly chosen GeiL 4gb ddr3 kit
Antec P183
Antec CP-850 PSU (is this massive overkill?)
Intel X-25M G2 80gb

I have a bunch of 1TB SATA drives to use for primary storage and an old ODD I can throw in.

What do you think?

EDIT: I forgot--recommend me an aftermarket heatsink. I've had good luck with Tuniq Towers on builds for others, but I assume you can't get those for lga1156 motherboards.

The PSU is indeed overkill. Check out the Seasonic X650 (AT review of the 750W version), it has more than enough power, and will actually turn off its fan altogether at low loads.

You may also want to consider an aftermarket HSF, because the stock Intel one is none to quiet. I would consider the Noctua NH-U12P to be the gold standard for quiet HSFs, especially when used in conjunction with the included noise reduction adapters (basically some resistors).

Everything else seems fine, that particular 5850 is known for being quiet at idle.
