Ya Know, Gas is ONE thing you Cannot Hoard..

Doesnt Mill have a large one? 😉

Gasoline tank that is...

Seems like I remember a post about him buying gasoline in large amounts.

Even if you had a tank, you wouldn't be able to store it for any significant length of time.

Gasoline has a shelf life of about 6 months. If you invested in some fuel stabilizer, you could extend it to up to 2 years if the conditions are right.

But that's probably what you were alluding to in your title.

how about diesel? what is the shelf life of diesel?
if i get a diesel electric generator for the house and have a diesel car, it seems like it would be good to get a 500 gallon diesel tank

could a diesel generator run on kerosene or heating oil in a pinch?

Diesel fuel grows algea in it after about a year. It's best to run it empty (but not all the way) and replace the fuel every year. Also for stationary generators it's best to run #1 diesel so the fuel doesn't gel in the winter.

Diesel's shelf life isn't much better at 18-24 months.

A diesel generator could theoretically be run on heating oil or vegetable oil in a pinch. I'm not sure about kerosene.

It would most likely be more than just filling the tank up with said liquid, though. In the case of vegetable oil, it needs to be filtered, heated, etc.

I have been thinking about this for a while. I want to get a 10,000W generator head and a small diesel engine, perhaps out of a VW Rabbit.. and run it off of free used cooking oil.

It would repay the initial investment pretty quickly.. after that, virtually free electricity....

Gas and similar products do not get siginfigcantly cheaper unless you purchase thousands of gallons.

i wasn't looking for a discount, having a generator implies using it. which would require some amount of fuel for it. like in a disaster
