A guy that I know gave me a call about 20 minutes ago saying that he needs a hard drive installed and formatted today (as in right at time of call) So around how much should I charge for this type of emergency job / basic hard drive install

Well you don't keep the child. That's what the black market is for.

hmm looks like bestbuy "geek squad" charges 40 dollars for a normal installation. Are emergency fees usually exorbitant?

Charge $40 for the install and another $20-40 as the last-minute-scheduling fee (outta my ass too but I would expect to pay 50-100% more for a last minute job)

Is he also expecting his data backed up and restored? If so that drives up the cost quite a bit.

I used to charge about $60 (1 hour labor) plus cost of drive, if I recall correctly. That was 5 years ago.

*This is the "OMFGEMERGENCY!!ONEONEONE" price.

A plumber will charge 30 - 50% markup/hr for emergency services. You should do the same.
