Once again, I've decided to upgrade this 27" CRT in the living room.

My main factors for this upgrade are

1) Size - I have a hard time reading the Tivo menu and descriptions on our current TV. It is much too small for the LR size and viewing distance. I'm thinking 42" at a minimum, but would prefer something 50" and larger.

2) Price - I can't see spending more than $2000 on a TV. It's not something I spend a whole lot of time in front of, but I do have a wife and 2 kids, so the TV does get some regular use, but nothing excessive. I would *really* like to spend as little as possibly, with a ideal price of $1000-$1400, if that's possible. I'll also be paying in cash, so financing options is not an issue. I'll be looking to purchase in the next week, so any Hot Deals will be taken into account.

3) Low-Maintenance - I want something I can buy, set-up, and then basically forget about it. I don't want to worry with changing bulbs every 6 months @ $300 a pop. I don't want to worry about the kids leaving the Gamecube on for a few hours and ruining the screen. I just want a plug-n-play TV that will last 5-10 years without any problems.

4) Technology - Lastly, since I want something that will last 5+ years, I guess it would be nice to get something that is not already behind the times. I don't have or plan to get a 360 or other HD-console. I also have DishNetwork with no HD channels. I mainly watch broadcast satellite TV and wide-screen DVDs. Although it would be nice to be able to hook my PC up to the TV for WoW and other games, so a 1280x720+ res and VGA connection would be nice, but not mandatory. Also, viewing angle is an issue, as our LR is large and square, so some funiture is at ~30-45° to the TV. Also, I still enjoy lying on the floor and watching TV and I know that on my neighbor's RP, the picture practically disappears at anything greater than 15°.

Anyway, those are my basic preferences and I've just starting comparison shopping. The things that kinda stood out to me so far are:

a) Sony KDF-E42A10 - LCD - 42" - This looks like a nice TV - being LCD and having all the nice inputs and 720p res -but at 42", it is on the very small end of my list, while sitting near the upper limit of my price range ($1800).

b) Samsung HL-P5663W - projection TV - 56" - Nice, very large TV for a decent price ($1400.) Has all the things I want, but is also a RP TV, as well as DLP. I assume that means limited viewing angles and (yearly?) bulb purchases.

I'm looking for recommendations, user experiences, and any info I may be overlooking. (Also - projectors are basically out of the question, due to both the lighting, price, and upkeep.)

Thanks.

Update:

Well, here's what I've tentatively decided to get next week.

Vanns.com has the Sony 50" Grand WEGA KDF-E50A10 with your choice of a free Sony DVP-NS75H DVD player or the Harmony H659BLK Universal Remote for a total shipped price of $2,099.99.

Unless something changes in the next 3 days, this looks like my option (probably with the programmable universal remove.)

Any thoughts?

edit: ( Oops - looks like I can get it a bit cheaper from Amazon.com. No remote, but added a Philips DVP642 DivX-Certified Progressive-Scan DVD Player for a total of $1,958.97. Then I can pick up the remote for ~$90, and still come out cheaper, with a DVD player to boot! )

If you use gaming consoles, older DLP sets do have a slight lag that annoys some people.

The 2006 model Samsung DLPs, HLS-4266, -4666, -5086 (42", 46", 50" 720p resolution) have a game mode that removes the lag.

Prices are a bit above your ideal range, but you can get the 46" for $1700 from a repuable mail order vendor (see AVSForum.com Power Buy forum) and might be able to get a similar price locally.

Bulbs are rated for at least a couple of years of use and cost $200. If you pay with a platinum card that doubles warranty you'll be covered for the first 2 years.

the only bad thing about the samsung is it has a 1500:1 contrast ratio... which is really pretty crappy. I wouldnt go with anything lsee than 2500:1 and actually prefer 10000:1 when available.

That is sexy. I checked Fry's and they kept trying to up-sell me to a $2400 Mitsu and kept dismissing all the other < $2000 TVs as "not worth it." They wouldn't even tell me about them.

Anyway, I just saw this model. 50" Samsung DLP Projection with 1080p, 15-pin D-Sub in, 10,000-1 contrast, and 2 HDMI inputs.

That's the 2005 model, with only 1080i input on the HDMI, and the slight lag in games.

If neither of those matter to you it's an excllent set, you might see if anyone locally will offer a similar or better deal on closeout.

Is there any way to tell if it's an older DLP meodel? Do you just have to check with the manufacturer? And by lag in games, I assume it's because the signal is upconverted. Does this mean that a DVI input from a PC would not suffer the same lag, as it would start as a digital 1280x720 signal?

Anyway, I think I may quest to find the best deal on the Sony KDF-E50A10. Looks like I might be able to get it for under $2K. It's the same TV as the E42A10, only bigger, right?

3 component inputs (one on the left side of the screen), VGA input (hooking up a laptop is schweet!!!), HDMI, etc and Optical Output...

only drawback on this tv is that it doesn't have split screen/POP functionality...if you don't use this, then it is not a big deal...

I think I'm going to go comparison shopping this afternoon, for both TVs and sound systems. Fry's, CostCo, Circuit City, BestBuy/ Any other suggestions? I'm near Plano/Dallas, so I have it all.

Comparing the plasmas that are sold at Fry's... the Mitsubishi and Samsung really stands out from the rest of the crowd.

Just so you know, I've had a Samsung DLP for over a year and a half and have not had to change the bulb yet, and the picture is still brilliant.

Samsung 2006 models are HLS-xxx, 2005 models are HLR-xxx. Not sure about HLP-/HLN- I think they're either 2004 or low-budget line 2005.

Lag is from the image-enhancement and upscaling, I think the DVI input would skip both if you feed a 720p DVI signal to a 720p set but you'd have to skim through the eleventy-billion post thread on the HLR- sets at AVSForum to be 100% certain.

It's a good choice too, I was considering the 42" A10 over the 2005 model Samsung, since both are 720p and both had very good reviews.

So very tempting, but I have to finally draw a line at the gradual price-creep. $2100 + $200 in sales tax pretty much blows my budget and gets rid of my new DVD player and Onkyo HT-S580 receiver/speaker setup I have planned.

I guess I'll just have to suffer through with the meager 50" version. :(

;)

OK, now what about cables? I have Series2 TiVo, and I think it only outputs coax and composite. Is the Coax digital?

Would I do this?

Video
Dish Network receiver -> TiVo (RF coaxial)
Tivo -> Onkyo HT-S580 receiver (digital coax or composite)
Onkyo HT-S580 receiver -> TV (composite)
DVD Player -> TV (component)
PC (ATi 9600XT) -> TV ( 15-pin D-Sub (Is this standard VGA or DVI?) )

Audio
Dish Network receiver -> Tivo (RF coaxial)
Tivo -> Onkyo HT-S580 receiver (digital coax or composite)
Onkyo HT-S580 receiver -> TV (composite ?)
DVD Player -> Onkyo HT-S580 receiver (digital optical? digital coax?)
PC (onboard 5.1 audio) -> Onkyo HT-S580 receiver (no clue at this point)

I'm now thoroughly confused. Am I even on the right track? I want all my audio ( TiVo, DVD, GameCube, (occasional PC?) ) to be piped though my audio receiver, and then all the video to be along the highest-quality inputs available.

 Any ideas?

FWIW, I ended up getting the AKAI (Samsung-made) 50" DLP from Costco for $1600 (including matching stand.) After adjusting the TV in-store, I got it to look almost identical to the $2200 50" Sony that is was sitting next to.

I'm very happy with my purchase so far for regular TV, GameCube, and DVDs. I should get my DVI->HDMI converter cables in today to try PC gaming @ 1280x720.

Grats on the purchase, looks like a nice set. I'm thinking I'll do some Best Buy / Circuit City window shopping after work here myself.
