Schadenfreude

It's not about playing a specific game, or anything of the sort; so I feel justified in posting this on the OT forums - anyhow, to move on;
I'm guessing that even in the OT forums, most, if not all people here are PC nerds - and if I get this right, most PC nerds are also PC Gaming nerds, as well.
So read on.
I've been reading up on PC gaming for a wee little bit, and I've been noticing a disturbing trend . . . the only genres that are "alive are the MMORPG's and the FPS'! Or they're the ones getting all the media coverage.
Don't get me wrong - I know people will post such insightful games as "but what about The Sims/ Age of Empires III/ The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion?" - Tell me this - what other options are there if I wanted to play an alternative instead? And even if there is, is there a diverse alternative as much as, say, if I wated to play a FPS, but not necessarily Half-Life 2?
I think not.
Even the Real-Time Strategy/ Turn-Based Strategy Games, numerous in their Starcraft/ Total Annihaliation days, are scarcely seen - am I wrong?
So what do you think? Is the realm of PC gaming slowly dwindling down to those two categories?
