On another forum a member listed a set of speakers for $225 + s/h. I lowballed him to $200 + s/h because on a prior thread thats what most forum members had suggested. He replied that he priced them based on a link to an ebay sale of the same item that went for $250 + $25 s/h ($275 total). After I talked to him about it we agreed to $215 + $25 s/h total of $240 (he saves ebay time + listing fees).
So after I paypal him the money, I get an email that when he went to UPS the s/h ended up being $45. $31 for the actual shipping price to my location, and then $14 for materials. Apparently the UPS store wouldn't insure the speakers to be sent in their original box and so he paid for them to double box and add peanuts.
In his email he basically asked for the difference. Now, I'm sort of on the fence whether this is fair or not. On one hand I did get it cheaper than most ebay auctions, but on the other when you price something based on an ebay link is it not fair to keep all the conditions (shipping price) the same as a deciding factor? If he had taken my lowball of $200 it would be roughly the same cost to me if you take the increased shipping cost into account.
