I'm thinking about buying a digital camera I can take to baseball/football/hockey games to take some pictures... I the basic problem i see with digital cams is the delay that exists between clicking the snap button and the picture actually being taken... do any digital cameras not have that delay? what is that delay called?

TIA!

Most newer cameras have little to no delay. My daily P&S digicam is a Fuji F10, which is one of the fastest on the market. The Fuji E550 I had before the F10 was the same. Casio Exilims are also very fast, as are newer Sony digicams and Canons. A good example would be the Sony H1, which has about ~.2 lag (unnoticable to most people).

All D-SLRs have zero shutter lag.

You want a 12x Zoom with Optical Stabilization. This is an awesome one for the price. If you want a newer one (Canon S2 IS or Sony H1), you will need to spend ~$90 more.

When I add it to the cart its only $249.00

i'm obviously going to do more research, but you really think this is a good cam for what i want to do, how far away will a 12x look like an upclose shot?

Samples @ Steves.

You can draw your own conclusion based on your budget. I would also check out reviews for the Canon S2 IS and Sony DSC-H1 before making up your mind.

I know my Fuji has a burst mode that can take a continuous series of shots with little time between them.

Or the updated FZ5, or the FZ20, or the FZ30 (20 and 30 are bigger, with more capabilities).

FZ5, will be like 300-450, fz20, 250-450, fz30, 550-650.

Hell, I'll sell you my fz20 for 400 if you want.

Personally, I haven't used the Sony or the Panasonic, but considered them before I picked up the S2, and IMO, the S2 is the best choice of the three...but I'm probably biased since I own one.

If you go by the reviews, each one has advantages and disadvantages versus the others, but the S2 is what most of the reviews prefer...but not for anything earth shattering..

:)

My sony P200 turns on and is ready to shoot in around 1 second. while shooting the lag was not noticable... over all VERY good for a 7.2 MP camera that is smaller that the diameter of a cd

I have a similar panasonic fz1 (2.1 MP) -- and would definately put that panasonic fz4 near the top of the list -- especially at that price ( $250 ).

I got the fz1 at the same price 2 years ago, and still think I got an awesome deal.

read up on it yourself over at dpreview, under panasonic-talk. (too lazy to link)

Image stabilization is pretty much a MUST for anything 6x or over. Lens quality is top notch.
