YA-Cellphone-T: Service provider in Los Angeles?

I'm pretty clueless about how all these work in the states, but after googling n asking some questions, it seems that T-Mobile or Cingular would be the way to go...

I'm in college (on a tight budget), don't talk much on the phone and mostly wanna own a h/p just to avoid the hassle of changing numbers everytime I move to another housing, for emergencies n stuff. Oh I like Nokia phones better too..

Is this correct:
Local plan: If I travel outside CA (outside the local coverage), I would have to pay roaming fees if i make/receive a call?

National plan: Generally the same rates in the continental US & Hawaii?

Opinions?

TIA

Verizon.

I have cingular and it sucks, everyone seems to be switching to Verizon or AT&T. Tmobile and Cingular my have more minutes but Verizon has better service.

Sigh..this is the problem..I've been hearing conflicting information..

I've also heard of lousy reception from AT&T... 😕

Verizon sounds good but it's kinda pricey 🙁

Everyone I know in LA says Verizon is the shiznat. After having Verizon for 6 months, I'll have to agree.

It gets the best overall reception in LA and all surrounding counties.
AT&T GSM would be my 2nd pick but it gets sketchy on the outskirts where all the old cell towers are.
AT&T TDMA is the only other thing I would consider, but that has problems with overloaded circuits at rush hour, and major problems in the beach cities.
Sprint wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have the worst customer service imaginable.
T-Mobile and Cingular just suck in LA, period.

I have seen NO problems with ANY of the providers, except Sprint. Pay your bill on time, stay within your calling plan limits, you'll be fine.

I'm yet to experience this network busy problem. You guys got phones glued to your ears or something?

I have T-Mobile in WLA area, its awesome. Rarely have problems. My plan is 40 bucks and I never run out of minutes. Nationwide, free nights and weekends, what more can I ask for.
