Ford Focus. The old model. '03 or earlier, IIRC. Whatever you sell your truck for, you can get a Focus for that amount or less. They're fun little cars to drive (I have an '02 Sedan), and get great mileage (the sedan with the SPI engine is rated for 26mpg, I get 20mpg with 4 pax and a heavy trunk, 30 with driver alone), and are pretty friggin' reliable.
From what I remember, the wagon gets slightly better mileage than the sedan (same weight, better aerodynamics), and the 3door gets slightly better than that (lighter, smaller, and the aerodynamic profile of the wagon). The ZX (zetec) series will be more common, but I'd personally avoid them - you get a few extra horsepower (this car's fun factor isn't about power, it's about manueverability) in exchange for worse fuel efficiency. The SE's and other SPI-engined models are what you should be concentrating on. Problem is that both engines have the same displacement, so you have to look at the badging on the car itself, since 99% of the time, you only get a displacement in ads or dealership computers.
And yes, you should be able to offload your truck for just about the KBB value.
