Has anyone heard anything new about this fan?

Here's the original link:
YS Tech Website

Supposedly things will get rolling mid-April, so I'm hoping people will start seeing these reviewed. The claim is 39dBA at 5800RPM, so I'm quite excited.

Well, I finally got them in last Friday, though all of them with Socket 478 heatsinks only. The specs don't look very good, but hopefully they really do cool the center of the heatsink better than traditional fans. Only time will tell... The fan noise it makes, however, is very unique!

Odd description of the item. A particular fan that just happens to come with a heatsink? :)

Any chance you might decide to do a quick test and compare performance of that heatsink when using a normal fan and the magnetic-tip fan? The size of the center hub still looks like it might block enough air to make the loss of space around the edges, that the performance change might be little. I assume the actual size of the fan fits 80mm mounts and that the 74mm is their rating for the width of the fins.

The specs don't seem to compare very well as far as actual airflow. I was able to quickly find a Sunon 80mm that puts out 39cfm at only 32dB. Hopefully the better center cooling performance makes up for the lower airflow, so you can reduce the noise level. I don't buy the YSTech line that it's automatically going to be that much better due to the new design, not so much as to make up for a 25% lower airflow, especially with the P4 line which has an integrated heatspreader so the center isn't so small an area as an Athlon or P3. The heatspreader will mitigate the performance help of the increased central airflow to some degree.

I have been playing around with the TMD fan and comparing it to the fan on Thermaltake's Volcano 7+, which also has 70 x 70mm mounting holes. Unfortuantely my MSI 645Ultra motherboard has no real CPU monitoring capability so I couldn't test the fan's performance accurately (I'll leave this up to the reviewers). Although in terms of noise, it was noticeably quieter than Volcano 7+ at the 4500 ~ 4800rpm range, mostly due to less bearing noise. Then again, the airflow felt less powerful at that speed as well.

I made two videos here, so you can get a rough idea:

TMD Fan 4500rpm@33dBA
Thermaltake Fan 4800rpm@35dBA

The gain in moving the motor from the center of teh fan is not that much. To put it simply the center of a fan is not going to push that much air regardless of design. Think of a normal household fan, if you feel the air preasure at the center it is much less then on the edges. The problem is that the center of the fan has very little angular momentium and doesn't move as fast as the outside edge. CD and DVD's have the same problem when trying to read data at a fast rate, it's much eaisier at the edge then in the center. So as for increasing performance I don't see a big gain from moving 5cm of fan from the outside to the inside of the blade. As for revolutionary breakthrough, hard drive motors have been using it for years, they just stuck it on a fan. Untill I see independant tests and numbers I refuse to believe hype.

I've also got one of the YS Tech TMD fans. I haven't used it yet, other than just plugging it in to see how it sounds. The fan blades are supported with a center hub. So there is sort of a dead spot in air flow there. But it's not near as much as regular fans.

I'm happy with my purchase, even though I had to buy the HS to get it. But hey, what's a guy to do? ;) I even paid the higher $25 for the combo from SVC. If I would have only waited a few days...

Bump

Any updates from those who have this fan? I've contacted a couple distributors and the Athlon 60mm style are due at the end of July.

The good news is that you can buy them without the P4 heatsink now. Bad news is that they're $10 each. Too freakin' much for a 70mm fan, no matter how unique it is.
