i have heard a lot about the performance increase using the xtremeG drivers. is this true? is there any reason not to use the drivers? how do they achieve such a feat... i would think nVidia would have optimized their drivers...

IMO yes. I don't game much anymore due to 2 jobs & full-time school, but when I did I used to have my GT OCed to Ultra speeds. It ran HL2 pretty damn nicely.
I had to reformat at one point and I reinstalled my GT w/the XtremeG drivers. HL2 is just as smooth and beautiful at stock speeds (never reset it to 400/1100) as when my card was at Ultra speeds.

Another  for XG drivers. May I recommend the 76.41's as they've served me utterly well and I couldn't be happier.

do they make a noticable difference above the nVidia drivers, even without overclocking?

The main thing that I noticed going between the reference NVIDIA drivers and the XTreme-G drivers was image quality. While there was a pure framerate increase, albeit slight, the biggest difference was in IQ. I noticed that textures looked sharper and cleaner than with the standard NVIDIA drivers, without ANY loss in framerates.

Another  for the XTreme-G drivers. BTW, I've had the best experience with the 76.41 revs.

They've boosted my 3DMark scores quite a bit (almost 200 points in 05 once) but they also caused some glitches so I just stick with regular official forceware.

I only gained 3 or 4 FPS, but the image quality is noticably better. Recommended for that alone.
