XScale devices to debut in early 2002 (for PocketPC's)

NFS4,

Is this a stab at Palm or an attempt to share the future of Pocket PC? say something that will spark conversation and maybe you will get more than just one response. Do you have any further information to share about intel's newest architecture scheme?

NFS4

Seems your pretty into pocketPC's so maybe you know a good FREE program for city maps??? I saw one from Microsoft but you have to buy it. Help...

I use PocketStreets 2002, I got it for free.

as much as you may hate palm, they aren't going away anytime soon. Palm's are still rated better than Pocket pc's because of their killer apps and easier funcitonality.

Palm is doing themselves in. Even their new CEO admits it. They have NOT innovated enough and Handspring and Sony are showing them up. And PocketPC's are taking over in the corporate and multimedia/networking sector. And the software thing is a cop-out. There is nothing that you can't do with a PocketPC that you can do with a Palm. However, Palms don't have nearly amount of hardware support or functionality to compete with a PocketPC or PocketPC 2002 device.

And Palms are rated better by whom??

From Palm's CEO:

<< Echoing the sentiment long felt by many in the PDA industry, interim Palm CEO Eric Benhamou recently told an NY Times report that Palm "simply did not innovate enough". Benhamou also said that his company has "made it a priority to correct this trend." Palm has long since been overshadowed by licensees such as Sony, Handspring, and HandEra that not only license the PalmOS, but find ways to extend it beyond the core functionality. According to Benhamou, Palm will introduce a new wireless email device within two months, become profitable again by midyear, and integrate faster processors and wireless technology such as 802.11b and Bluetooth into their devices by fall. >>

I think a lot of Palm users are still living in the 90's. Palm was the best when it first came out, but it has lagged far behind ever since Pocket PC (CE 3.0) came out. I ditched my palm IIIxe a long time ago, and my Casio EM-500 has been going strong ever since. The only app I missed on Palm was Sim City, but that all changed when Sim City 2000 came out. I am now waiting for NFS and Ultima to be released by ZIO soft. Can your Palm do that?

What is the problem? Both Palm and Pocket PC are valid ways to store PIM, apps, docs, xls, etc... Why is it that people feel threatened by palm? To me it seems that it does what it is designed for and nothing more. If all I wanted was to carry my personal information plus some added office capability I would stick with palm. If I wanted to do EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD I would choose Pocket PC. Is there a reason Pocket PC must monopolize the handheld market? There are thousands of people who choose not to have a laptop in there pocket because its is to darn complicated and to big(unlike Vx, m505). All they want is a simple way to carry PIM info.

So while the Palm users are in the 90's enjoying their simple lives we are here talking like its not fair that there is something else besides ourselves out there. Could someone please fill the rest of us in on the purpose of this string and tell us about the

<< What's difference between StrongArm and Xscale other than clockspeed? >>

X-Scale uses WAY less power.

<< What's difference between StrongArm and Xscale other than clockspeed? >>

(editting to fix mistakes) After reading some more I have found several mistakes in my post. StrongARM implements V4 of the ARM instruction set, XScale implements version V5E. So the instruction sets are different. Also, for what it's worth, StrongARM is a trademark of ARM Corporation, XScale is a trademark of Intel Corp.

Here's a neat performance/power graph from developer.intel.com

Woo! Looks like my decision to hold off on my pocketpc purchase might have been a good one. Now I'll have to wait and see which x-scale device is most appealing.

<< Seems your pretty into pocketPC's so maybe you know a good FREE program for city maps??? I saw one from Microsoft but you have to buy it. Help... >>

If it's pocketstreets you saw, it's worth it. I have Streets98 for my pc, I've seen pocket streets in action. Streets98's level of accuracy is scary, right down to the way the creek behind my parent's house flows around the property. I find their maps to be much better then mapquest's.

PalmOS powered devices arent't going anywhere for a while. I heard them refered to as the "mac os of the handheld pc world" and I think that's pretty accurate. For the first time handheld user, I'd get them a palmos device and let them decide if they needed the power and features of a pocketpc.

<< The problem I have with Palm is that they do not innovate. The M505 is way overpriced for what little it offers >>

Which loops us back to NFS4's original statement...

<< Take that Palm! By the time Palm gets StrongARM, we'll be using X-Scale >>

Back to square one! The lack of innovation from Palm may give them a wake up call to do more than add a color screen and a SD slot. With the latest merger of Palm and TI maybe the i705 will be more promising than the bombshell 500 series. Does anyone know the role of strongARM in the next Palms?

P.S. Xscale should be coming for PPC this quarter!?! I doubt it.

The original statement actually means more to iPaq owner then to be wasted on the childish Palm vs. iPaq quarrel.

Xscale is around the corner. Owners of 36xx are probably better off to upgrade the iPaq to PPC2002, and wait few months.

I have the suspicion that the 38xx iPaq is going to have a very short life, and will be replaced by Xscale really soon.

My guess is that X-Scale will debut with PocketPC.NET

Car:Handheld analogy.

Saturn (A different Kind of Car. A different kind of car company). = Palm (A simple minded product, for the simpleminded consumer.
iPaq = Honda
