"xS" Antiailasing

I know what antiailasing is so there is no need to explain that. What are the "xS" (4xS) modes? What advantage do they have over standard antiailasing?

Thanks, I can basicaly use any level of AA I want because my cpu is such a bottleneck anyway.

?xS is using a combination of supersampled and multisampled pixels, rather than just one type.
