Ever since this machine got infected with anti virus 2009 it's been goofy. I thought that I had removed it successfully but maybe not. After removal, the machine worked fine for about 2weeks and then started to not load windows after the logo screen. It will not boot to safe mode nor last known working config. I tried recovery console to no avail and then I tried an in-place upgrade. Now it just seems to hang during the install at the "installing windows" screen. I'm trying to save the info on this drive as it has important business info. The drive checked ok in recovery mode with chkdsk. If I install a new hd will I be able to tranfer info with the other slaved? Or any other ideas? I'm a self taught novice at this so go easy on me.

Some things to think about.

If by "got infected with anti virus 2009" you mean a virus, then the virus will be there with a second Windows install.
If you mean the infamous (Norton) product, there are ways to make it go to bit heaven.

You could do a reinstall without formatting. (a repair install).

You could install a second copy of Windows, just install to a folder other than one called Windows. The install program will give you these options if it sees a currently installed OS.

There are many free file recovery programs available. Hiren's boot CD.

You could pull the HD, put into another computer as a slave drive and copy off what you need. (but the virus will still be there, if there is one, and may spread).

Thanks for the ideas Bill. I'm not really sure if I'm dealing with a virus. "Antivirus 2009" is a malware program. Is that the infamous Norton product your talking about? I am in the middle of a "repair install", but it doesn't seem to be working either. It's just hanging at the screen where you have the list of events on left side and all the XP spam telling you how great it is. The progress bar is moving at normal speed in the lower right corner, but the hd indicator lamp is just flickering every couple of seconds and the cd is no longer spinning. I'm going to give it a while and see what happens. If not I'll try installing to a different folder. Thanks again!!!

What you have is not Malware but a Trojan and is very difficult to get rid of. Unfortunately it requires a reformat and reinstall of windows. If you have any important files you can try to move them over to a flash drive or another HDD. Hopefully it won't carry over any of the trojan.

You can try Malware Bytes antimalware remover ... I have used it to knock out AV20008 XP and it works fine.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

You must run it in Safe Mode .. Also disable System Restore prior to running it.
In some cases, you will also find that some tabs are Missing From Display Properties.
If that is the case after you are done go to link below to fix them (Line #128 on Right Side of Page)
